So, we got tickets for boxing in the excel at 1.30 in the afternoon and we're looking for accommodation now. We is me, Mr Kip and little kip who will be 2 by then.

I'm thinking a couple of nights (day before and the same day) outside London and getting train in on the day. We will be coming from Devon and would rather not have to drive around London finding wherever we are staying and outside London strikes me as a bit cheaper. I'd also rather not drive there and back in the day as the rumour mill suggests there may be tickets available for other events on the day (no conspiracy theory here!!)

I have no idea where to start looking (apart from YHA and that's a no go) and have no idea if what I'm thinking is feasible. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Oh yeah, and no I didn't think through the realities/moralities of taking a 2 year old to boxing when we applied for tickets. Not sure we'll take her (her ticket was £2) but still need family accomodation in case we get tickets for something else as well.

I live a stone's throw from the main arena.

Self-contained flat, all mod cons, internets the lot. 200m from DLR station, 10 mins from Lympic park. 10 mins to CanaryWharf, 20 mins to Greenwich, 30 mins to West End.

Interested?

£500 per night.

You think I'm joking?

Accommodation anywhere near will be astronomical. Most hotels and that will have bin booked up years ago. Your best bet is to find something on the outskirts and use the Tube and that to get to the venues.

Not joking at all. Wait until the Lympics are on, then see what prices accommodation will be costing...

Might as well cash in, after all, it's all about the 'lasting legacy', in't it?

Get a few bods in through the 3 weeks, that's a couple of very nice new bikes. 😀

The cheaper Accor brands (Etap, Ibis) only usually release their rooms for sale 250 days ahead, so you might be in luck if you stay up til midnight 250 days before you want to book. Might be worth ringing to check they haven't already sold all of their rooms to tour operators.

Alternatively, I would recommend trying independent B&B type accommodation as it's less likely to be to be bulk bought out by tours / people trying to make a quick buck. If you head out south-west, you can get the regional train into Waterloo and tube from there and you could also watch the road cycling / time trails around Surrey and Hampton Court Palace if the dates coincide.

konagirl - that's a nice tip, didn't know about the 250 day thing.

Cheers for all the other links, I think we'd like to stay out of central London and get transport in but London is a big place and knowing where to avoid and where is lovely is a difficult one.

We like the idea of a nice B&B but for ease of use may well go with a bigger hotel. We have a budget in mind and are also cultivating family/friendship links so may be able to avoid all hotels. We'll see. Cheers again though, I just didn't know where to start!

obviously its easy for me, given that I own one... But my plan was to go down in my camper van and park up in a car park somewhere!

I'm sure you could hire one, make a holiday out of it!

Yeah, wondered how feasible the whole camping thing was. Obviously not in London itself but somewhere nice outside it.

Bitter...

BTW; wasn't trying to be deliberately negative about accommodation, but trust me, unless you're lucky enough to get in early, prices will be ridiculous anywhere within a few mile radius of the main venues. And i'd imagine all the hotel firms will be looking to cash in on the Lympics, as it's guaranteed increased revenue. Supply and demand.

I am serious about cashing in meself though! Why not, eh? 🙂

I know of people planning to rent camping space in their gardens!

Elfin - I'm sure you're right and no I don't blame you for trying to cash in. However I think I need to re-submit this advice request.

Imagine I'm a hick numpty who knows nowt about the big smoke although I have been there before and used the tube. I have no idea how long it takes to get anywhere by rail or where are places to avoid staying in. I have in my head the idea that we could stay somewhere just inside/outside the M25 (on the SW side as we're comin from Devon) and then use our famous transport system to get around. Am I living in cloud cuckoo land or is this feasible?

I'm not taking the mick, I really have no clue and believe that someone on STW must have a good knowledge of London and the surroundings to be able to help!

THIS WOULD NOT BE A GOOD IDEA We in London would report such a van to Police
But you would be instantly moved on by Police anyway.
