Scott Brash, show jumping gold medalist, is a friend of a friend. So what's your tenuous link to Olympic glory then?

I tarmacked Katie Taylor's driveway.

Is this some sort of dirty Oirish euphemism or something?

Raced against Ben Ainslie on UK Youth Squad as a teenager.
Taught Jessica Ennis when I was supply teacher in King Ecgberts, and was working with Nicola Minichiello (another supply teacher) who went on to three winter Olympics and is now married to Toni Minichiello.

That's actually probably the least tenuous post of all of them (apart from the Claire Baldwin one I guess).

I spent a lovely afternoon chatting to the mother of the man placed 5th in the 110m finals a couple of years ago. She'll be as proud as can be, and rightly so! I raise a glass of rum to her!

I know all the pentathaletes, well enough to go out on the lash with them ( one was the housemate of mini transapps god father). I once cooked dinner for one of the girls in my pre married days, hoping to get my wicked way only to have to sleep in the next room while she noshed my mate...

See you after the ban.

Friend is an ITU triathlon referee that just refereed the 2 brothers get medals (hardly name dropping though).

Could name-drop a current rainbow jersey wearer, but it's a non-Olympic discipline, so I won't.

Could almost certainly conjure up a not-very direct link to at least one Winter Olympics attendee.

I knew a girl called Gemma Gibons (not the same one) Also knew a girl called Beth Tweddle who did gymnastics (also not the same one). A girl I used to Kayak with is now free style world champ and was doing displays at Lee valley white water course and I once overtook lizzie armtitage on a ride (until she started pedaling again and dropped me.)

My first BMX was an ex-Scotia race bike, from the right era that it might have been one of Chris Hoy's. Or might not obviously.

Tenuous: My sister goes riding with Chris Boardman's mum and has taken his kids kayaking

More tenuous: I once beat Liam Killeen in a time trial*

Not very tenuous at all: Emma Pooley was on the same team as me in an adventure race - I towed her up some of the hills on the bike leg (she was a better runner than cyclist back then). Oh, and we won!

* he went the wrong way and was DQ

One of my friends has a facebook profile picture with Usain Bolt. Another one has a video in which he's named and thanked by Usain* for something or other. He does mispronounce his name though.

*First name terms, you see?

I won a race once where chris hoys dad was calling out the names/doing prize presentation.. Only when the line that starts with 'and in first place...' was said,it didn't end with my name on the end.

Much confusion, discussion and peeved off-ness. Not his fault.

I've raced with Bradley Wiggins. He won, I didn't. (Wally Gimber 2001)

I've raced with him many times - first at Herne Hill where he kept getting moved up into our group (I'm about 2 yrs older than he is) but then he'd just go on to beat all of us anyway.

That's the tenuous one, got loads of far less tenuous ones but that's not in the spirit of the thread!

Couple of local links to Tom Daly (closest I suppose is that one of my colleagues is his second cousin).

I have also met Claude Piquemal a couple of times -he grew up in the same village as my nan, won a couple of olympic bronzes and helped set a (briefly held) world record for the 4x100m relay. My nan still knows him and there is a little plaque over the house he was born in.

Bloke in my office met a former Olympian on a train. He got a bronze for shooting in the 70s. He said "Seeing as you didn't ask" and presented his bronze medal. We don't know his name (which makes this a rubbish name-drop).

I once shook Bradley Wiggins hand. Soon after, he began his climb to stratospheric heights of greatness. Make of that what you will.

And my BiL works for Kelloggs and met Sir Chris Hoy. He also acquired for me a Bran Flakes polo shirt bearing the signature of teh great man.

I know and have rowed with some of the GB team. I clashed oars with Sir Steve a long time ago. Oh and I capsized a gold medalist on a really cold winter's day too 🙂

A mate of mine knows Sir Chris Hoy very well from uni and I've heard the tape that they made of them all farting after a few shandys 😀

During the Olympic bid process, I was a builders labourer and carried bricks to the bricky who was building a wall for someone involved in the bid process, I was informed that the previous day he had been on the phone to Lord Coe.

Athletics clubs are pretty small communities now I think back.
