My other half expressed a wish for a Wii fit. She is not a gamer normally.

The Wii U is the new console and is £249 plus the game price or I could buy a pre owned old Wii for £39 plus an old Wii fit game.

Not sure which way to go?

Does the Wii have a quiz game like the old buzz game for the PS2?

If you only want the Wii Fit stuff, get the old console. If you want a new console for other reasons, in honesty the Wii wasn't known for its longevity when it was new.

Leftfield suggestion; Xbox 360 and Kinect? I'm expecting the 360 and PS3 both to depreciate vertically after Christmas when everyone's got their shiny new toys to replace them.

It is quite easy to jailbreak the original wii and then play all of your backed up original games from an external hard drive (for convenience!).

Old wii:

Mario Kart
Any of the Lego games
Wii sports
The Rabbids series
Wii family ski
Mario party

Probably loads of others I cannot remember.

The original wii with balance board is a great family console.

I've no idea what games you like, but I would say get the Wii then wait for a game you really really want on the Wii U before purchasing.

I like all the Nintendo's own games like:
Mario Kart
Super Mario Galaxy
Wii Sports
Wii Sports Resort
Zelda Twilight Princess
Zelda Skyward Sword (imo the best zelda since Ocarina of Time).

But if you fancy something a little more 'adult', Resident Evil 4 is one of the best experiences ever on Wii.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
(or the trilogy if you've got 100s of hours to spare) is also really good.

These games sold so many at launch, that now they're cheap as chips.

Another vote for Wii & balance board.
Oh, and on the topic of M-rated games, get a copy of House of the Dead: Overkill for cheesy grindhouse B movie-style zombie shooting. More humour than RE games, and better music.
