You could park in Manchester and get the tram/taxi is one option.
You could take your chances parking on some of the local streets. There's a pub on big roundabout nearby (The Quadrant) and we used to park on the roads branching off Great Stone Road for United games. It's about a 15 minute walk.
Forgot to mention there's the Lowry carpark over near Media City if you want guaranteed security and relative proximity via tram.
Double edit - there's parking at at Cricket ground but you might have to book beforehand or get there mega early? We used it for United games so might be different arrangement for gigs at the actual Cricket ground.
Gorse Hill Zone B requires permits for events at Old Trafford Football ground only. The permits are not in force for events at the cricket ground.
Gorse Hill zone b is the the red area on this map. It's about a 20 minute walk to the tram stop next the to cricket ground.
