I'm fairly sure a couple of bikes would fit with the wheels off but before I go car-hunting could some kindly owner please confirm if a couple of bikes will fit without dropping the seats?

Ta!

Easily. We regularly fit three people and three bikes in the Passat B7 as we did in the B6, we even managed four plus four once with everything dismantled. It is a very practical car for a cyclis; with the seats folded you can just roll a bike into the back obliquely then lie another bike on top of it, using a blanket for padding.

And yes the boot will swallow two dismantled.

A B5.5 is better imo. I have a B7 now. In the B5.5 I was able to get big bikes (SC Heckler width ways across the boot standing up with both wheels off with a bit of anal tesalation. This meant easily three in the boot with the seats up. including wheels. It was ace. To me the B7 seems to have a smaller boot.
