On the same day I have been signed off sick for the rest of the week I have had a job offered to me with another company that I want to accept.

What's the best and most professional way to hand my notice in?

Phone my line manager? HR? Pop in and have a chat (I can drive but consultant wanted me to rest properly for a week).

I suspect there will be a counter offer that I'd like to chat about, if I wasn't Ill I'd talk to a director to see the lay of the land.

Can you wait till you’re better to go in and chat or does the new place want you to start ASAP?

Good call, I know the hiring HR well, I can ask them and see, expect they want me quickly due to time lines etc.

"I have had a job offered to me with another company that I want to accept."

"I suspect there will be a counter offer that I’d like to chat about"

To paraphrase The Clash - are you looking to stay or go?

Whilst you can verbally advise (ie call in), most companies would want your notice in writing, and would not act upon anything you have said until this is received. It is normal within that to state the notice you are giving and when you intend your last day.

So, if you really do want to explore the counter offer, best bet is to wait until you are back at work and request a meeting with the appropriate Manager/HR to verbally advise them of the situation and see where it goes.

If you really want to go, any counter offer is pointless as you will have itchy feet now and be off within 6 months anyway. In that case, phone Manager/HR, verbally advise them and then post your notice letter recorded delivery.

I cant see any way out of this predicament other than to burn your present employers premises to the ground.

You'll unfortunately probably get redundancy pay but you'll be able to start your new job with a clear conscience about  not having to hand in your notice.

If it were me I would: accept the new job and explain the situation including the bit about travel and rest ordered by the consultant (a reasonable explanation that shows you're not a layabout) then hand in notive when you return. As for counter offers, I wouldn't, they look bad on you to the new company and its mercenary to the one you stay with. Good luck 🙂

He's right... you will have to burn the place to the ground... will take the lime light away from you.

I've no plan to accept the counter offer, was interested if me leaving would actually get them make a decision on my future role with them, they have been dangling carrots for ages that's just annoyed me at this stage.

Whilst I love my current job the new one appears similar but way more pay and benefits plus I can cycle to work.

I'll gain about 15 hours a week back to my life and be fitter, winner winner, chicken dinner.

Thanks Ed Hornsby, that's the kind of advice I was looking for, I can't burn the place to the ground, been too good to me.

Wait till you're back it looks a lot better to do it face to face. Doing it remotely would likely piss someone off and risk burning bridges etc.

risk burning bridges etc.

Do this too. In fact just burn everything to be safe.

For a second there I thought I’d almost got quote to work properly

Let the new folk know you are off sick and you’ll get back to them next week

Saccades

...I’ll gain about 15 hours a week back to my life and be fitter...

The whole point of work is to pay for your free time. Definitely a winner. 🙂

If your not going to accept a counter offer then forget about holding out for it. Accept the new job and email in your resignation tomorrow. It's just work, you're not burning any bridges unless you actually take a dump on someones desk.

Sounds to me like you should just phone it in. You aren’t going to accept the counter offer, so it seems like a waste of everyone’s time waiting to hear it and turn it down before letting everyone get on with things.

Assuming your new place want you to start asap and you're probably on 4 weeks notice then I'd hand it in now and let both your current and new employer know the situation.

How did you get on last night?  Did you manage to make it look like an electrical fault?
