I have a portable hard drive (Iomega eGo) that I want to attach to my work PC (Win 2000), but when I plug it in, it doesn't mount. It is formatted FAT32 (on my Mac at home).

Any ideas what is not working, or how to fix it? This PC is "locked" so I can't install any utilities, run "Manage Disk" etc. 🙁

If the PC has been locked down by your IT department then they may have also disabled USB devices to prevent folk from doing exactly what you are doing.

Could be any number of things, as Graham says they would have blocked USB mass storage, or addition of extra drives of any form. Can you use a flash pen?

or its not really formatted to FAT32, and its actually formatted for a Mac file system

I can use a USB stick, and it's definitely FAT32. FWIW I can mount it on my Linux box.

Maybe it needs USB2 ports??

Possibly. USB1.1 is a bit slow for a hard drive.

Some puters dont supply enough power through the USB to power portable hard drives...

I have one that has a lead with 2 plugs on one end...

never had to use them both with my drive tho
