I have, rather ****ishly, clipped a car swinging into a parking space at lunchtime. Left a note, sorted out the with the insurance, spoke with the other car owner - all sorted.

But, Mrs Arvn tells me that the popular course of action (from the evidence of the Facebook), is to say nothing and leave the scene immediately. Not, I hasten to add, her recommendation.

Tell me STW, is my moral compass awry, have societies mores shifted so significantly that I am just an out of touch old fogey? Is there anyone who would do a runner?

Well let’s think of this logically.

Posting on Facebook “Thaknks to person who bumped into my car, left their contact details and then exchange insurance details with me” doesn’t attract as many “U Ok hun?” Replies.

That is the usual way, yes.  My cars have been hit a few times. Never had a note left.

Saw a telly ad last night where Direct Line say you won't lose NCB if you come back to find a dent in a car park.  So based solely on that I deduce that it happens a lot, and Harvey Keitel is to blame.

Every single one of the not inconsiderable number of dents and scrapes on my car has occurred whilst it’s been parked with nobody in it. I wish more people were like you.

I too doubt facebook is a good  guide, thus my question

Someone drove into the corner of my fence yesterday and pushed the cross beams right in breaking through the nails moving it by about 30cm in from the upright post.  Guess they never noticed that they just reversed into a fence and carried on their way (although assume it was a lorry reversing out from a tight road so maybe they didn't actually notice but pretty shit driving whatever)

I should also add. O’Brien’s of Prudhoe drove and rippped out the side of my Golf the driver denied all knowledge and O’Brien’s of Prudhoe claimed that the HGV in question was fitted with cameras, despite telling me previously they all were.

People who drive off without a note, or worse, cause an accident, admit it at the time then later deny it, are cs.  I'm not a c.  Therefore I try not to behave like one.

(Unless it looks verrrry expensive).

I reversed into a parked car a few months ago. Left a note, got all fixed through my insurance.

It is the right thing to do. Not enough people in this world are doing the right thing to do. This is why, in my opinion,  society is currently failing

Your a saint OP. I've never had a note left on my car nor do I know anyone who has. And I'll be honest I wouldn't leave one either. I'm not going to be honest with so little chance of reciprication. That's how it is I'm afraid.

You can still expect premiums to increase though- from ALL providers.

I take it you don't want things to change, then?

You have done the right thing by taking the responsibility.  You will sleep well.

Those that leave after damaging others property will never sleep well ...

Someone once caused a dent on my car with me ended up with £350 respray and fixed bill.

Someone took a decent sized lump out the side of my car a few weeks back, 6 days out of the body shop for the last lot of damage.

Note? I suspect they didn’t even bother to reverse, just kept going to ensure minimum inconvenience to themselves. That’ll learn me to park in Ebbw Vale.

We woke up to this not so long ago. No note, nothing. So yeah, seems like that's de rigeur these days. I've no doubt that whoever did it was fully aware they did it, too. I'm also surprised we didn't hear the scraping noise from our house - which is the one you can see in the picture!

Crikey, how much does it cost you to repair that?

Cost me £350 for a quarter the damage of yours.

I've been on the receiving end of two hit and runs on the bike, so no surprise

Dunno - it's still like that. It's my wife's 12 year old car, and it's set to be replaced as soon as it fails an MOT in an expensive way*, so we decided to just leave it. There's damage to the front wing, both doors, and there was also some superficial damage to the rear wing too, so I can only imagine what the cost would be!

(*Every time she takes it in for a test, she crosses her fingers that it'll fail badly but it passes without drama every single time and the garage always cheerily tells her what great nick it's in mechanically, and that there's still a good few years left in it. Haha.)

>>We woke up to this not so long ago.

And just to add to that story, about 2 weeks after this happened my wife was walking back to her car after work (it was parked on a fairly busy street). She was about 20 yards away from her car, when another car came fishtailing around the corner and slammed sideways into hers, taking off her wing mirror and theirs, and doing even more damage to ours... then sped off.

She took down the number plate and called the police. The other driver flat out denied it (despite my wife actually witnessing it). The driver was an old feller, and claimed that the damage you could see on his car was from a previous accident somewhere else - and his wife backed him up. There was nothing the police would (could?) do, despite us still even having most of his wing mirror.

I didn't get that one repaired either - just bought a used mirror on eBay and fitted it myself.

But still... other drivers, man!

On the other side of the coin to many of the responses (and aligning myself with the OP);

In 35 years I have gone out of my way to find the owner/driver of three cars that I have damaged (wing mirror and two bumpers).

In the same time I have been hit five times while my car has been parked and every time I have had a genuine note or a knock on the door. The last note I received was about 9 months ago and when I rang the driver he could not stop apologising, I said I was  not upset about the accident as he had left his details.

There are good people out there 🙂

The way society is going concerns me.  I am teaching my daughter to do the right thing (the don't be a diick rule) but with all the crap people try to pull these days I'm wondering if I'm doing the wrong thing.  **** you, I'm alright jack is becoming the norm.

I’ve tried explaining this to my kids. Current thinking is that if you haven’t been seen by anybody, you haven’t done anything wrong.

You can take that a step further and find many people with the mentality that if no one in authority has witnessed it, and cannot prove it, you’re completely innocent. Boils my piss.

My son has a strong sense of right and wrong, loathing people who won’t take responsibility.  He was woken one day last November to the sound of a terrific crash. He looked out of the window to see a Peugeot hatchback embedded in the back of his Volvo. He had spent his savings on a V50 estate and   had to do a lot of part time work to insure it as a 20 yr old. It had taken a good deal of searching to find one in good condition and it really was his pride and joy

He got dressed and went to see the driver, a woman in her forties who was wailing that the sun had been in her eyes and she couldn’t see out of the windscreen. My lad asked her whether it had been wise in those circumstances to carry on despite being completely unsighted, fast enough to write off a Swedish tank? Her passenger then started to argue with him, insinuating he shouldn’t have parked where he did (perfectly legal and safe) and started squaring up. ****s. Boils my piss

Bloody hell. I’m not on Facebook so I don’t get to witness ‘the norm’ as so many people describe, so I’m actually quite saddened by what is being mentioned here. I’m not sure I could live with myself if I damaged a car and then simply drive off.

Don't get me wrong though, I’m far from perfect and I’m sure it’s more about assuaging my own guilt rather than doing the right thing, but still!

It won’t whatever I do or don’t do.

Is that how you justify it?

Not a new thing. 30 years ago I was sleeping after nightshift and heard a car crash into the postman's car in the street outside.  I got up and saw the driver get out, look at the damage, bang his head on his roof in annoyance, then drive off - After clearing a bigger hole than the previous 3" one in his iced up windscreen.

In this case bad karma for him. He failed to report it but my wife had also seen it. We gave details to postman and statements to the police.  Some months later the driver was convicted of careless driving, fail to report etc at court after trial.

I enjoyed telling the court the bit where he banged his head off his own car.
