Right after much debate i need a "propper" winter coat as living in blackpool rain and wind is the daily weather of choice!! I have approx £150 to spend on a waterproof jacket, iv had my eye on tnf triclimate evo removable fleece and trendy looking found it for 140 rrp 200, or a berghaus vinson at 90 but this is just a "shell" to be honest it will be a "pub" coat, iv sin some nf coats at daft prices online from chiniese retailers claiming to be end of line sellers, im not fussed if its a copy more so if its waterproof or not, has anybody used these sites or own one?? Help would much be appriciated

You need to get to a decent outdoor retailer and try different makes of jacket on. As with shoes, bikes, saddles etc, etc, etc different brands are cut different and fit some people better than others.

Berghaus make great jackets - but unfortunately they've gone the way of burberry and for that reason I wouldn't wear one in or near a large town...

Those t shirts rock!!!! Iv bin to millets and tried on a few brands and tbh berghaus quite snug in xxl and the nf was a peerfect fit in xl!!!! Nf is a yank brand so zips are on opposite side as with most american gear, all my tommy and tapout hoodys have opposite zips, im swaying towards tnf as theyre more "tech" than good ol geordie haus!!! Has anybody actually bought one from the retailers mentioned above?; the discounted "end of line jobbies"???

I'm still in mourning that my favourite 15 year old Rockport boots are now consigned to dog walking only.

I think my Degre7 and Eider jackets are safe for another few years 😉

I've bought from Sport Pursuit and had no problems. Just be aware of that the dispatch date is often a few weeks after purchase.

Most companies make a range of stuff that works but is basic and fashion. They also make some top notch stuff. The fashion may be over priced but the top end kit is generally worth it. Just retired my 12 year old mountain hardware jacket.

Its the fact id like a propper waterproof coat and not a shitty showerproof one, the swing was my older bros nf coat, a resolve which he wore in the shower pissed up to prove how good it was and after a few mins of drunken sillyness he came out bone dry in the top half, scientific proof right there!!!! Lol im not trekking in the lakes or riding my bike in downpours just nice to look at and when it rains it will keep me dry when out with the wife and down the pub, so tnf may be overrated?? Surley some of their high end tech must have bin passed down to the affordable consumer coats???

I have a Musto goretex coat as a technical waterproof but love my Barbour for keeping me snug and dry during nasty winter days/nights.

Try somewhere like this: http://www.williameyre.co.uk/clothing.html (were I get mine from, nice friendly service)

Or you could always get a flasher mac 😀

Im afraid not as im 6,5 and 20stone and i dnt think the mens section in millets had some womens coats mixed in lol, its the yanks they like to be awkward!!!! Just had a look on sports pursuit and its made my choice enen harder now : / my barbour liddesdale is amazing but not totally waterproof unfortunatley and i have a habbit of wearing joggers when i go gym or take me woofer out so a barbour will look a bit daft so i save that to fit in on the wifes horse riding comps lol

I'm struggling to get a waterproof that is long enough. Most of them seem to finish just below the waist but I need one a bit longer so my arse doesn't get wet on rainy dog walks. My Lowe alpine did a great job but now needs replacing after a good few years use.

I've got a NF Venture jacket and tbh it's shite. Leaks like anything in heavy rain and is definitely more of a fashion name on the cheaper stuff. I just wear it to work now.
Have just ordered a Berghaus Temperance 2 jacket off sport pursuit after reading some reviews online so will be interested to see how it performs. It's 3 layer gore tex so should be pretty good.
For alternatives, look at the Montane Event stuff (available cheap in TK Maxx although they annoyingly put security tags through the fabric).

Karrimor have released an Event jacket too for around £90. Have heard good things about it. I think they definitely produce 2 levels of clothing though - the tat for the mainstream Sports Direct chav and then a couple of higher spec bits in an effort to retian some of their heritage.

I had a long look around before opting for the Berghaus one and it was a toss up between that and the Montane Super Fly XT. Gore tex is supposed to be easier to care for than Event and the Berghaus Falcon hoods look the business for hiking in poor weather plus it was a fair £40 cheaper than the cheapest price I could find for the Montane.

Unless you're spending hundreds and opting for the gore tex stuff, i'd steer clear of North Face.

RAB and Mountain Equipment make good stuff but the cuts are tiny, TNF is the only make that caters for my shoulders. Berghaus has gone really downhill.

Fjall Raven is amazing if you have ££££££££££'s to throw at it.

If had a Berghaus for years and it is the best coat I've ever had. If and when it wears out (no signs yet apart from the cuffs starting to fray) I'll get another.

Berghaus is by far better quality for the field. On my outdoor excursions I'm up against rocks lying over cliffs etc, the Berghaus will always fare better IME. Its better made, drier, warmer and in most cases more packable (if that's important)

TNF have 2 ranges I think. One that is supplied to the likes of Go Outdoors and a more technical higher quality range that is only sold through specialist outlets.

Some TNF jackets like the down Nuptse jacket do seem to be the jacket of choice for the Burberry cap brigade.

Berghaus are similar, they have some everyday jackets which are pretty average and some really top quality high end kit.

Personally I rate Haglofs and Norrona the highest but also have a few Mountain Equipment and Mountain Hardwear items which have been excellent.

For a 'pub coat' as the OP is looking for, there is really no need to go with any of the big mountain names - just get something that is comfortable and looks good. Which probably means North Face.

The other brands whilst, arguably, better kit will also be slightly overkill for just throwing on around town. I think just find something you like the look of and job done.

And to add something more technical - the own brand waterproof fabrics from any of the big brands that make mountain kit (North Face HyVent etc) will be easily good enough so I wouldn't even bother looking at anything Gore-Tex as you will not need the performance. Most of the in house fabrics are at the level Gore were a few years ago now - the Gore, eVent, Polartec stuff just gets you that last level of breathability and durability that you'd need at the top of an Alp.

Hope that helps!

Amazon as mentioned aren't too bad either.

I've got a North Face Summit Series Gortex Pro. The zip requires two ungloved hands and patience. 🙁

How about a ski jacket, you can often pick up last season's models at half price. I've got a Schöffel that only weighs about 200gm more than a classic mountain jacket when the ski-specific bits have been zipped out. It's rubust, cosy and offers excellent mobility. The nearest to the perfect jacket I've owned.

NF are aiming, by their own admission, to be the Nike of outdoor wear.
Nike originally made only top quality sport shoes. They still do, but also lots of fasion tat.

The similarities are obvious.

For that reason - Berghaus.

Wow some actual real answers!!!! Tbh speed 12 has hit on the head its just to stop me getting wet whilst out and about not a weekend scrambling in the lakes, i do like tnf style and the one i had my eye on is from the summit series, the berghaus ones on the sports pursuit give me more bang for buck but the black one i want looks a bit chavvy due to the reflective strips all over it and also the long delivery times.

There isn't much (any) stretch in the summit series so factor that in when considering sizes (ie how many layers you will have on underneath)

£150 for a pub coat, have you won the lottery ?

I'd say max £60-70 for something decent, Berghaus seems to cost as much as North these days.

I have a great North Face waterproof I bought for hiking for £100-ish. For the pub I have a Barbour, it's 30 yrs old and still going strong, the older and sh1ttier it looks the more authentic it is.

Tied in the middle with baler twine is the best look, imo. 😀

Ditto old NF Gore-tex jacket - mine is still going strong after ten years or so. If it makes me look like a chav, so be it. I dinnae give a fug.

In the last couple of years, berghaus quality has fallen off a cliff. I've had items unstitching themselves. Of the two, TNF is far higher quality despite not being as good as it was. I have a 11 year old nuptse jacket. Nowt wrong with it.
If you can afford it, go for arcteryx. Not much compares but it ain't cheap.
Thinking ill be buying a fjallraven next up though.

Blimey hasn't stuff got expensive, a new Barbour is £200 ! @noteeth, as much as I agree with you I'd quite rightly be laughed off the streets of Surrey for that.

FYI My North Face is a Hyvent (cheaper than Gortex), has a great hood and long enough to keep my fat @rse dry

EDIT: I have had good experience with Mountain Warehouse kit too as above.

+1 for TKMAXX. I picked up a nice plain black Sprayaway EVENT jacket last year for £30. Perfect for dog walking duties, but also smart enough to go over a suit for work. (I'm chav scum tho as I have a few TNF things too)

Sadly there is a lot of truth in that.

When I want top quality gear I got for Mammutt for exactly those reasons, North is rather middle of the road now.

North Face has become the default attire of Cheshire mum in her Range Rover, much like the car she doesn't like getting the jacket muddy. I saw a whole family of North Facers at Delamere, they walked as far as the pic-nic benches and then hogged the lot, the boy was splashing too much in his new Chelsea boots so they packed up and went home. It was after that I noticed a massive change in their customer base.

You can say that about a lot of brands but fortunatley in blackpool they all wear stone island and lacostegear but some are now wearing barbour which is turning my stomach as iv had my liddesdale now for 4 years and is my staple pub coat but isnt waterproof its ok in a small downpour but then saoks me through, and jambalaya i work 80plus hours per week away from home to earn a decent coin so the wife dunt pick when i want a decent coat as it would stop her hubby from getting a "cold" : ) n love the willy wonka pik although have you ever bin out at night in blackpool?? Its an adventure in itself!!!

6ft 4" with a long back. I've got a berghaus jacket with an extra long body. My local berghaus outlet store ordered one from the factory for me. It actually goes down below the bottom which is what you need when it's peeing down.

I think tnf may pip as its a shell and you can put the included fleece inside to make a warm coat and just looked on a climbing and hiking site and apparently the old berg has gone waaaaayy downhill in the past few years as they moved manufactering to china to offer "customer savings" where as tnf are still made in usa aparrently, although the sports pursuit site is very tempting, but there has to be a reason why there are jackets half price, tnf seem to sell out left right and centre and never have old stock about.

TNF have their own outlets full of older stock. There's one on Cheshire Oaks.

Half of this thread sounds like the conversation freshers have about fashion.

Berghaus is the choice of the physical geographers i work with, and they spent half their lives outside playing in the dirt.

Berghaus did go a bit downhill for a few years, and their low end stuff still isn't much to write home about (low end North face doesn't get quite as cheap, and generally looks a bit better) but the new high end Berghaus is as good, if not better, than the equivalent north face stuff.

The top-end Berghaus stuff is basically back to being best-in-the-business stuff. Their helmet compatible hoods are generally regarded as the best you'll get out there, and the general quality and design of the Xtrem and MtnHaus stuff is right up there with the likes of Rab, Haglofs, ME, etc. Have been this |-| close to getting a Velum active shell jacket as the fit and finish are incredible, but my current Marmot shell is still going strong so can't really justify it - a properly nice jacket though.
