Ok you're a sensible lot. Who is a good choice for insuring a family holiday without any of the extreme sports or even riding a bike? Looking for good value but not a scam.

And while we're at it, any recommendations for those people who insure the £1500 deposit on a hire car?

Get annual travel insurance - it covers you for any overnight trip, not just family holidays and costs not much more.

Don't get annual travel insurance from Admiral, the lying, thieving shysters who used every excuse to avoid paying a single penny on a lost suitcase (lost in mid-August, not found until mid-November).

Thank you but we don't need annual (apart from my austrian alpine club this year)

Fair enough. Still don't use Admiral though.

its worth looking at credit cards that give coverage if you want full insurance - eg the amex platinum card comes with full worldwide travel & car insurance, plus lounge access etc - at a fairly high cost but it can work out as good value if you use all the perks

And bank accounts.

Nationwide Flex Plus covers all our trips (apart from kitesurfing) and includes breakdown & Phone insurance too.
