I thought it was supposed to tie in with the Mayan calendar and as that isn`t in synch with ours it will be hard to predict accurately.

From what I read we were created to take over their jobs. Maybe they are still bitter about this and in a cunning ploy to get the unemployed back in work they plan to destroy humankind on 21st December? Or maybe not.
