Looking at one of these 7" tablets. Among other things I want to use it for video playback, sufferfest etc. Can I connect a USB stick via the mini USB charging cable socket and play them back from there?
Thanks
You can do it on a nexus 7 (2012 - not certain on the 2013 one) with an OTG cable (about £3 from amazon, etc) and the Nexus Media Importer app.
just saw amazon offering previous gen Kindle Fire HD for £99 on their homepage. don't know if thats of interest..... Don't own one myself so not based on personal recommendation....

Have a look at the reviews for this. Apparently it's basically a first gen Nexus7 with 32Gb, a Micro SD port, HDMI out and USB on the go, so I think you can plug a flash drive in with the right connector/adaptor and read straight off it. Although, with the micro SD port, you might as well just use one of those.
I am very tempted to get one, but quite a few people keep telling me that 7" tablets are too small and I'll get fed up of it in no time. I do tend to agree that it is a bit small (the 8" Samsung Tab 3 seemed that bit more usable from the short play I had with it) but I am finding the price hard to resist.
Size depends on usage, shirley. I wouldn't want much bigger than a 7" tablet, it's too much to lug about. You could try holding it closer to your face?
I have a nExus 7, and its great.
But, I would like a 10, as its a little too small for reading graphic novels...
The Hudl has a microSD card so you can just plug that in to read content. You can get USB stick sized card readers so it works like a USB stick in your PC. Might be slightly more convenient as you can fill a 32Gb card up with stuff and just leave it plugged in.
Adding to the size debate. There are some nice 8" screened pads from China that are the same size a 7" pad as they have thinner rims around the screen.
Thanks. Looks like both will do it.
Used a 10" tablet and for me it defeats the point - wanted something that I can easily hold one handed in bed (no not for that you dirty minded lot), port around on public transport, chuck in a bag etc and 7" is perfect.
1st Gen Nexus 7 here - £119 refurb from Argos with 12 months warranty...
Carphone warehouse have the 2012 nexus 7 down to £119 now.
I'd thought I'd got a good price at 139 last month!
What's the difference between a tablet and a kindle? Is it just brand names? Like Hoover & Vacuum cleaner? How do you get stuff on these things, USB port?

Have you tried an 8" tablet? I've got 20/20 vision 😀 , but when I had a play with the Nexus 7, I wanted to zoom in slightly to look at some web pages comfortably.
A direct comparison with a Tab 3 8" revealed that the slight increase in screen size meant that it just tipped over the edge into not needing to zoom into the same web pages to view them comfortably.
But, the form factor was still small enough that you could hold it one handed. I have used iPads and find them a bit too large for holding one handed....
I thought it was me being fussy, but after speaking with two people at work about them who both own 7" tablets, they both reckoned that they were too small. They reckoned that I'd be better paying a bit more to get the 8" tablet, rather than take the cheap option and regret it!

Kindle is the Amazon book reader. So, not really a tablet. It's the device with the 'e-ink' screen that lets you download books, gives you excellent battery life & has a screen that is readable in all light conditions (very little reflection). The Kindle Paperwhite is a newer version that has a backlight so you can read it in the dark.
Amazon also do the Kindle Fire range which is a tablet; so basically depending on how you look at it a big smart phone without the phone bits or a a computer without a keyboard.
Kindle Fire, Google Nexus 7 or 10, Applie ipad, Applie ipad mini, Samsung Tab 7 etc. are all just different types of tablet, the same way that the Orange Five, Specialized Stumpjumper, Trek Fuel EX are all types of bike.....
