[Closed] New York - Anyone Lived There?

I'm thinking about applying for a job in New York. Never been there but really want a change. Has anyone lived there before? I'd only be going for a couple of years so is it worth the upheaval? And, more importantly, is there anywhere good to ride reasonably close? Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

As in NY NY? Or Albany NY? Or some other place?
I spent some lovely years of my childhood around Albany where the woods are in driving distance and I imagine there'd be lots of biking. It's beautiful country.

As in New York New York. Manhattan... I know biking opportunities would be quite limited but it sounds like a great job and I wouldn't mind a radical change!

This is a good starting point for trails, forums, meets. http://www.nycmtb.com

I go over there quite a bit (wife from Queens), there's loads of riding -even in Manhattan at Highbridge Park.

Its an amazing, mind boggling city, its so diverse - from Bhutan to Belgium you'll find a vast array of peoples.

Go for it.

I lived and worked in NYC (as in Manhattan) for 3 years prior to Sept 11. It was a wonderful experience and I have very fond memories of my time living there.

If you like City life then there is nowhere better than the Big Apple.

I wasn't such a keen biker at the time, so no hardship in that respect. But, if you are planning on living in Manhattan or any of the 5 Boroughs (although there is only three that would be contenders Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan), then I would say you may find you are limited to laps of Central Park on a road bike.

Others may know where there is decent riding an hour or two from the City

Well there you go ... I had to look up Highbridge Park, lived there for 3 years and never even knew it existed let alone ever been there. Can't say I ventured north past 86th street too often and 168th street are you kidding .... ๐Ÿ˜†

Think you'd be harder pressed to find biking down in the city area. Usually you need to be in National Forests and National lands. However I'm not certain. Most of the biking would be UpState.
If you had/got a car (not as cheap/easy as getting them here in the UK) it would open things up a lot.
It is a very lovely part of the world and if/when you get out of the city it's beautiful in the mountains and along the shore. We used to go out for long hikes to see waterfalls and go dipping in the ocean at 'The Shore' as they tend to call it.
The city is nice too lots of museums and theatres and cultural things to do as well clubs and great restaurants. Some of the best pizza, (soft) pretzels, bagels, and doughnuts to be had in the world in my opinion.

GJP - I'm not kidding, Its pretty surreal actually, an ultra-techy 'mini' downhill loop surrounded by projects, it makes for an exhilarating ride. In the summer NYCMTB host a race series on weekday evenings.

Cunningham Park in Queens has great trails too, they've put in loads of work - you can turn up every Thursday (dirty Thursday) and help build.

You can also get Metro-North from Grand Central up to Blue Mountain reserve, the trip takes about an hour. There's loads of nice singletrack.

Long-Island has some nice trails too, accessible using (Long Island RR from Penn Station).

I can't say I am too keen on the words ".... surrounded by projects ....", but a nice view in that first picture.

I used to take the LIRR out from Penn St to Long Island for some road rides, but found it took the whole day up so didn't do it that often.
