I know there are lots of these threads, but I'm looking for something under £300, not interested in huge screen, 22", 24" would do. I think I want built in DVD player and freeview, but why would i need built in Wi-Fi? what is that for on a TV? I'm thinking i would use it with a wireless AV connector, for work work type things, but also us it as a display for my soon to arrive raspberry Pi, simple considerations, any recommendations? Would prefer to buy from amazon

Don't have wifi, but I have an ethernet port which is connected to the router to stream stuff from LoveFilm / over the network. You can also use it for iPlayers, Spotify and stuff like that. Mine is a samsung and you can download all sorts of apps (weather, news, pay-per-view content etc) a bit like a Smart Phone.
Not essential but useful, and will become bigger and bigger I think.
We've got a Samsung Smart TV, its not got built in freeview or a DVD player, but the network connectivity and the smart stuff is very cool. Its got a DNLA streaming service on it so you can stream video, photos and music from a pc or laptop over your home network and as well as being able to use youtube, iplayer and netflix apps over the internet. Lots of ports for plugging in bluray and dvd players etc too. Picture is pretty decent as well.
Not sure if they do them in the smaller sizes, but if you can get one with the wifi/network connectivity and dnla streaming you'll wonder how you got on before, ime anyway.

If they have one in stock near of course, built in DVD player generally means a poor TV.
Id go with WiFi /ethernet if you have the option on a screen that size. May not be that important now but its the way media is going, so you'd be future proofing yourself somewhat.
Thanks all, i went for a samsung without wi-fi but bought a wireless av kit for it. only 170 allowed me all sorts of other toys
Streaming direct to the TV? Does no-one use AV amps any more? Pssh. Dogs and cats, living together.

OH HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVE?!?!?!
are you darcy?
We got a Panasonic TV a couple of weeks ago with pretty much all the connectivity you could think of. No tried the DNLA streaming yet but YouTube works brilliantly.
Watched over an hour and a half of Volvo Ocean Race 'programs' last night on a 46" plasma with not one single buffer (and our broadband is not quick at all all) - brilliant.
As whatnobeer said.... don't know how we got by without it 😐
So get the network connections - it's [probably] the future.

*Sticks hand up*
Lovely Yamaha amp here with Bluray, Sky and Xbox running through it - Xbox performs any streaming that I do occasionally do to it. Wouldn't dream of streaming music direct to my tv, or watching films in stereo sound for that matter.
