Have got all the parts together finally. Last one arrived in the post this morning.

So any guesses as to what these will be tuned in to?

The current system is good for stabilising the cellar temperature during the summer (diurnal range is less than a degree or two) but the water tanks arent evaporating/cooling enough during extended warm spells to keep the cellar temp down low enough.

So Im going to change from an open water mass system, to a chilled closed loop one.

This lot will still run on the 25kWp of PV panels I have. Hopefully over extended periods the cellar temp can be kept a few extra degrees below ambient.

Always fun to experiment 🙂

Red is outside diurnal range throughout the summer, blue is inside the cellar diurnal range:

Similar data, but here you can see how the cellar temp rises during the summer above 20degrees at times (red/blue lines). Orange band is outdoor diurnal range.

Will connect the closed loop system to the pipes in the cellar

Just need to find a 12v power source from somewhere to test it as there isn't enough sun at the moment to run it off the solar panels.

steel & zip ties.

A bodger's approach to electronics.

I have used a nice dollop of Arctic Silver on the peltiers though as a nod to "Doing it Roight"

Once Ive got a power supply for it I'll try and get a video of it running.

Camping lights are often 12v, you may well have a 12v PSU lying around somewhere - or just use a car battery / cigarette lighter thing.....

Stoner,

Having a think about your system would it not make more sense to run your PV panel through a solar charge controller to a battery and then onto your cooler.

Something like This and then on to a old car/van battery.

That's quite a handy little box. I could do with having a spare battery around as well. Cheers rusty, I will look into it.

🙂

Savennières is one of the AOCs I have spent some time studying the most.
If you like Baumard, I highly recommend tracking down M. Papin at Pierre Bise.

Think Ive got one 2003 left, some 05 and a few 07. Didnt bother with 09 as his prices have got silly and he's gone too peppery.

I've stopped putting wine down for the time being as have more pressing commitments at the moment but will return to that particularly pleasant hobby in the not too distant future.

I still have a couple of vignerons that I buy regularly from in Nantes, Montpellier and Bourgogne but if I'm honest it's more quaffing wines and stuff ready to drink these days topped up with Naked wines if I run out between French trips.

Nantes

Mainly Muscadet or the whole of the Loire AOCs?

Can't beat a good muscapete! 🙂

I have some friends who grow there. Muscadet, grolleau gris, gros plant and some rose. None of them particularly stunning but all drinkable and at a euro per litre en vrac you can't really go wrong. Tend to buy in 10 litres and bottle it up.

Plus buy a few good 'uns for better occasions.

Reds and most rose I get from further south.

Don't know how you do it - the temptation of having nice wine around the place is always too much to stand and I end up drinking the bloody stuff!! Much shed / cellar envy 😉

Surely a raspberry pi programmed into ambient temperature sensor/external temperature sensor and a specific internal temperature sensor alongside a door open and light on or off setting. The pi could then control the cooling system according to temperature and or requirement.

In theory yes, but that only matters if a) there's a risk of a solar powered chiller over-cooling the cellar or b) energy is scarce.

Since a solar powered system is obviously linked to excess temperature and solar collection is free then there's no real need to meter out how when the solar energy is consumed.

rusty mac
thanks for the tip, one of these arrived in the post this morning:

I think you're idea is a good one. It makes sense to have a managed power supply, if only to stop low current running to the pump that isnt enough to start it.

Got a test rig set up in the workshop. Started at 5pm with te water at 17degs and 4degs ambient. Will see how it goes, but the heatsinks are already warm so something's happening. Running on a 40Ah battery for now, eventually it will be connected to the PV array via that controller ^
