I need a bloody suit, 2 weddings this year and Mrs Tiger says I have to get one.

i just don’t own stuff like this, the smartest thing I have is a pair of Howies trousers.

M&S?

How do avoid 40 year old in a bad suit syndrome.

Dont want to spend much on something I may wear twice.

Need ikea like instructions to suit buying in 2018

I’d spend more on one you’ll keep for years rather than little one one you’ll wear once or twice then chuck.

Classic style, dark colour, quality cloth, couple of pairs of trousers and you’ll keep and wear it for long enough that the cost per wearing will be less than a more ‘disposable’ one.

Bit like bikes, really...

John Lewis do a pretty good range of own-brand suits to, although I'm thinking more general office wear rather than weddings. I'd normally say get two sets of trousers and one jacket but if you're really not going to wear one often there's probably no point.

Slaters were very, very good a few years back for my wedding My work suit is M&S because it's machine washable. Got suit plus 4 pairs of trousers in the sale.

If it's just a suit for posh I'd do slaters as they will fit it to you and can do alterations .

I’d never heard of Slater’s, they look good but unfortunately there isn’t one near.

Looks like a suit is a suit will though so hopefully not much can go wrong

If you are a 36 chest or below then Slaters don't offer very much choice at all (but then neither do M&S in the stores I've been to). If 38+ then no need to look anywhere else really but always find Next have a good selection of styles and Kin by John Lewis have some very nice stuff that's often available in the sale.

1. Not going to an M&S outlet 🙂

2. Dark blue, no pattern.

3. Taken to a tailors for any required fettlling.

Job jobbed.

Find one that actually fits you. Even an expensive suit will make you look like a hobo if it doesn't fit.

For my Chimp-esque physique that means either buying a suit and getting it altered or buying one from Next whose sizing have a combo that fits me off the peg.

I've never had an M&S suit that fitted.

Hire one.

If you're going to hire an outfit either go full highland dress or this....

...as a tribute to Magnetodog.

Not that I wear suits / shirts any more, but when I did M&S clothes were some the best made stuff out there. Outlasted anything else I've bought over the years.

I've moved away form suit wearing recently, I'm more of a navy trouser and tweed jacket kind of a guy at work (I know, swoon).

Announcement yesterday of a imminent funeral and potential for interviews in the next few months means I need to get a new suit.

Can one suit do it all (interviews, funerals, important stuff at work)?

The only shop near me is Next.

Modern funerals are no longer all black suit affairs, anything smart will do. It's the turning up bit which matters, not what colour your clothes are.

No one will notice bar shoe snobs (who are few and far between).

The thing which always makes me smile is the most successful people I meet regularly are our Company Board (chairman has circa £150m to his name) and yet they turn up in middle of the road M&S / Polo shirts wearing hush puppies. They probably wear M&S Y-fronts bought by their wives (although I've not asked). Basically they wear comfortable clothes and don't give a toss what anyone else thinks. The people obsessing over the style of their shoes and whether their boxer shorts are the latest brand are always the people who haven't made it financially but are desperate to look like they have....

Burtons is always good - unless you are 40 and look like an old man that will be fine

TM Lewis are worth a look in my experience. Better if you can drop on one of their DFS alike sales. In house (basic) alterations are a bonus for me rather than a department store purchase followed by faffing around with separate alterations.

Next offer a good range of styles and fits. Good prices for suits, shoes and shirt / tie combo. Can't really go wrong. All my work stuff is Next as it looks good and seems to last well. Having said that I may well have a trip into Slaters for my next one.

Don't bother with M&S. Nothing says a man has given up on life quite like M&S clothing. 😉

I have an old pair of Loakes, was assuming these would be fine?

(Got married in them 16 years ago so bound to bang on trend now)

Will replace the gaffer tape covering the holes and polish obvs

For suits I got to M&S, I find that you can actually get an alright suit for not a lot of money. As above I think the main thing is to make sure it fits you correctly. I am always in-between the standard leg lengths so used to just buy longer length and deal with it. The first time I got them taken up was a revelation, they look so much better not gathering at the bottom. I get it done on every suit now.

Also, nice dark blue suit can cover many bases

argh, just thought, would we be wearing ties to weddings nowadays?

christ!, other than obsessing about mowing my grass, realising all my mates got married over 15 years ago and i've not been to a wedding for yonks is a real getting old call

Ties? ....Absolutely.

Also, wear kneepads under your trousers.

You might be getting a bit old for knee sliding across the dance floor but i'm sure you can still show those five year olds a thing or two.

Just bought a new suit for the first time in about 15 years. Went into John Lewis, first suit I saw I liked. Then proceeded to go round all the major retailers in a large city before going back and getting the one in JL. So my advice is buy the first one you see, it will save a lot of time.

TM Lewin, not more expensive than M&S and they will tailor them for you.

Modern styles, but no elastic waistbands......

Always go dark suit, light trousers and alcohol not a good match as you get older....nothing worse than a 40 year old drunk with a wee stain!

And I hope you're joking about those shoes?!?

Debenhams for suits... lots of choice in price, style, colour, size etc. and not as old man as M&S

A suit isn't a suit isn't a suit.

TM Lewin are glued with all buttons sewed up, but Charles Tyrwhitt have floating chest pieces and everything is done properly, for example.

I'd go for a quality off the peg, eg tyrwhitt, then pay someone like Stitches £50 to make it seem like it was made to measure. Navy or grey, two button, it will never age.

Generally, get two pairs of trews as they wear out first, but this doesn't seem to apply to you.

Shoes. Yes, they're Loake, but those square toes need to be left in the 90s where they belong. Get a pair of toe cap oxfords and be done! Again, timeless.

My only pair of shoes have square toes and I have a wedding next month too.

Are they really that unfasionable because I can't get my head round pointy ones that look twice as long as your feet?

They're black too, so will I be carted off and beaten to within an inch of my life by the fashion police for wearing them?

Suit - Slaters, but if not then House of Fraser. Go for a dark blue job, either plain or a light pattern and this will do for all the above situations.

Shoes - Black is much more versatile but as you've bought brown already then make sure you buy a belt that matches then.

Shirt - White ideally, light blue if you must, long sleeved, make sure it doesn't have a pocket on it (and if it does then don't put anything in there) and well fitted, spend £30 at Charles Thyrwitt or TM Lewin rather than a poorly fitted M&S number.

Tie - Yes, plain navy, perhaps with a light pattern will serve your right for most occasions and look suitably smart.

I had same predicament last year(daughters wedding) I went to next and got black 3 piece job.. And don't scrimp on shoes I got nice black leather Italian shoes from next too and a colourful tie..

Black means it'll do funeral duty and a tie change it can cope with most situations

I went to a wedding where everybody wore black. It looked like a funeral. It was also in Finland, so the atmosphere was funeral-esque!

If you're slim, get yourself to Tiger of Sweden ( https://www.tigerofsweden.com/gb/) . They also sell their suits on zalando, etc. I have two Nedvin suits in grey and navy. The fabrics are good quality and the construction is well above what you get with next, m&S, etc. They are also durable and can be dry-cleaned.

Don't scrimp on shoes, yet you bought some from Next? Don't think those 2 statements make any sense at all.

Black means it’ll do funeral duty and a tie change it can cope with most situations

Nope again. Times are changing, I've been to far too many funerals recently and none needed a black suit. Buy a dark blue or even a grey suit and it will be much more versatile.

Northamptonshire produces in my view the best shoes in the world. They are an investment and can be repaired and re- lined countless times. It's a declining craft industry worthy of support. Cost per wear is lower and can make a cheap suit look fine. If, on the other hand, you are aspirational and want to look like the bosses then try Blue Harbour.

Sorry lunge didn't have you down as a snob 😉

Next do £30 shoes and £80 handmade Italian ones. Yes you can spend way more but I'd rather keep it for bike bits 🙂

Nah, not at all, but shoes I spend money on, "You're either in your shoes or your bed, so invest in both". Bought my wedding shoes 5 years ago from the Barker factory shop, used 3 or 4 times per week since and they're still spot on. They've had a few new soles put on them but they scrub up so well after that much use.
