Kindle just arrived - anything I should set up or download first?

Not expecting book reviews just wondered if there any freebies or free trials worth getting

There's a number of free (modern) books I found on Amazon; choose the under £1 category when you're in the ebook section.

If you want a bikey book have a look at Jill Homer's 'Ghost Trails' about the Iditarod race in 2009. Only £3 something.

Her blog is here if you want to have a root round before you buy:

Ernest Shackleton's story of the South Pole was free last week or so - not sure if it still is...just started it but it's rather good so far...

South: the story of Shackleton's 1914-1917 Expedition

I've not got into it yet so haven't downloaded much at all - that and 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Man Who Knew Too Much (which I'm hoping is like the Dan Akroyd film but suspect it isn't anything like it!!!)

Set some 'collections' or folders up before it's too late and you end up with pages of books you've downloaded, and can't remember what on earth they are- for starters I set up a 'samples' one for all the free excerpts that I've downloaded from Amazon, delete the ones I don't want and keep the ones I've enjoyed to remind myself to buy them someday. A bit like a favourite list. Another one is good for 'free and old crap' that has all the free out of copyright stuff that you're sure you'll read one day, but in reality you never will - The Iliad, Oliver Twist etc etc.

Kindle discussion forums on Amazon are quite useful to dip into occasionally- there's lots of self publishing authors pushing their wares on there, usually at cheap prices, and normally a few people keeping tabs on temporary reductions/free books from the mainstream publishers or better known authors.

Now got Jungle Book, The Raven and Kidnapped...I'm sure the first 2 are nothing like what I'm imagining in my head and I've read Kidnapped a few times and it is good...

I've got that as well, there's loads of old copyright-expired stuff available for free. Amundsen's "The South Pole" is shorter but also worth a read

Good God yes, if the champagne were good enough.

Three Men And A Boat should be available, I got it free from iBooks earlier this week. If you like SF, look for Cory Doctorow's books. He is in favour of Creative Commons works and gives away all his books as free ebooks. Dead tree versions are also available.

I think you need a website called "free kindle" or something.

http://freekindlebooks.org/

champagne and plastic cups

So that would be the paper version, basically single use, like a plastic cup.

A paper book is heavy, tries fold up on you, hard to read every other page lying on your side, looses your place, doesn't have a built in dictionary, needs mail order or a book shop once you've finshed. Doesn't have 26,000 free options
