Why do cows have their ups and downs?

"A new study shows that the longer a cow has been lying down, the more likely it is to stand up, but the reverse is not true. Once up, you cannot predict how soon a cow will lie down again"

I wonder if they're doing the same research on sheep?

Also cows can see in ultraviolet light. It is believed that several hundred thousand years ago there were more types of poisonous grasses in existence. Cows may have developed ultraviolet sight to be able to distinguish which plants may be harmful to them. Most of the grasses have now disappeared but the sight remains. One possibility for the grasses becoming extinct is that cows would not eat them and so did not scatter the seed in their feces.

Also another throw back to early evolution, cows can hold their breath for over eight minutes.

It sounds like the sort of conclusion a seven year old would also reach if they stood watching a field of cows for half and hour or so.

Useful to know if you ever want to suffocate a cow.
