Picking up my first company car later today. Quite excited so had to share. Will also be the first time I've ever had a brand new car as have always bought second hand.

Alas policy dictates it's an oil burner, which seems a bit out of touch. I've done the sensible thing with a commute over Switzerland's snowy roads and opted for RWD too.

Disappointed there are no pictures yet or even identifying what the car is.

Lets have a guess shall we?

RWD pretty much means Merc or BMW these days doesn't it? A/B class are FWD as are most of the 1/2 Series I think?

I'm going to guess, as its company car - a BMW 318d?

I'm going to go with a 320D SE saloon. In white. And manual. 😀

1-Series is RWD (except the X-Drive which is AWD).

Happy new car.

Reverse pegging a small hatchback? That's pretty niche.
I hope you've got a garage

You obviously have to get it from Ling.

Definitely not keeping it simple with a Dacia.

You will have to watch out for them pesky wheelie bins too 😀

Could it be the Porsche he’s dreamt of owning his whole life?

I've always fancied one, but couldn't get the planning permission.

Sorry for the delay in replying - work got a bit busy and then I was driving 🙂

I do ski, but luckily my housemate had an x-drive that I can trade..

Did you read the instruction manual to establish how the indicators work?

Bet that garden takes some maintenance, especially that rockery.

That boundary fence is a bit OTT.

Never mind the boundary fence, look at the size of the garden.

Those 1 series do look good actually!

Lovely car op, I've rediscovered the love for mine (which should give STW a rest over Christmas 🙂 )

Considering saving for a set of winter alloys / tyres for mine also.

Still can’t find them, no mention of them in the manual!

That's not an x-drive, I meant my housemate has* an x-drive that I can swap with him if I want to go somewhere particularly snowy. Though Switzerland is pretty efficient at keeping roads to ski resorts passable.

I've driven it on a very icy car park and it's tricky enough to get the back to step out with it's winter tyres on.

I saw a great YouTube clip of BMW x drives in the snow. Really rather funny.
It had an Audi rs4 at the end showing them how it’s done.
Nice car OP.

You’ll get more places with proper winter/snow tyres on that 125 than an x-drive with regular tyres.

Just the sort of thing I’d like to know. I do like the 1 and 3 series but rwd is a concern. I’m always wondering whether a 1 or 3 series with winter/cross climates would do the job. We drive to Alps 2-3 times a year and I like to use the car when I am there. Do the dealers / Swiss forums have any videos/tests of them in the snow ?

You should plan some gratuitous lunch/riding adventires the other side of some mountains for the summer.

Keep us posted and enjoy.

Here you go Jamba

Older car but it makes the point. I cant help thinking the current car driven in the Eco setting withh reduced throttle sensitivity would be better.

Jambalaya,

I've got a 525 estate which we've had coming on 9 years. The first year we had it there was a light dusting of snow and I found that the back end of the car would very easily lose grip and slip so I bought a set of alloys from a breakers yard which I had winter tyres fitted to. Every November I take the summer wheels off and out the winter ones on, swapping them back over April-ish.

Its fair to say that winter tyres completely transform the cars handling (have had Dunlop winter sports and Pirelli sottozeros, preferring the latter) - we had 11" last weekend and the BM had no issues at all. It can still lose grip and does on ice but you'd expect that in almost any car. For Alps type trips we also have a set of Michelin easy grip kevlar snow chains for the legal requirement (and also a set of snow socks which in my opinion are better but are not legally snow chains).

Our other car - an Alfa Mito has crosscllmates on all year and they work well too. Clearly can't compare performance in a meaningful sense between a 1.4 petrol hatchback vs 3 litre estate but they feel OK.

HTH?

In my experience having the correct tyres top trumps 4WD.. I’d much rather have RWD on winters than 4WD on summers in the snow. I had a 325i on winters for 2 years in a row and it only snowed once.. however the Beemer was spot on in the snow - steered, stopped and went well. After the initial getaway having RWD can actually be advantageous as weight transfers to the rear pushing the tyres in the road/snow surface. Obviously if you drive like a dick the back end will be swinging round like no ones business!

^^ agres on tyres vs 4wd but I’d have all seasons on a 4wd too. My issue is finding a good used quattro is hard & exensive especially if you don’t want a mahoosive motor.

Anyway I would be interested in fwd vs rwd both with all seasons on a test - re they close or is the difference still massive

I've found the same re. good used quattros, specifically the A4 estate.. they same to be almost exclusively 3.0tdi automatics and I'm after a manual petrol.. they're like hens teeth!

That's one hell of a BM 525 estate with 11inches of ground clearance?
My old lifted Defender would have been near its limit at that!
