Finally a new version of the STW favourite, to be unveiled properly at the Geneva show:
http://www.citroen.co.uk/new-cars-and-vans/future-vehicles/new-citroen-berlingo
An XL version (4.75m long) could be great for family duties and easy bike-carrying.
Even more van looking than before.
chapeau...
Looks rubbish, will be unreliable and ultimately cheap for me in a few years and the best car ever shhhh don’t tell everyone.
I don’t really like the current styling Citroen are morphing into their vehicles, certainly the “softroaders/urbanroaders”. All looks a bit melted plastic, random placement, bit of orange for my liking.
The DS7’s nice, because in the main it doesn’t follow the “cactus” wild bumper placement regime..
I couldn't really get a feel for the XL. It will be a longer wheel base? Currently the larger volume one is more over hang at the back.
Sad to see a touch screen but at least the legend continues
Nice...apart from the bubble wrap bits...however should be cheap second hand by the time my current one needs replaced, braw!
I like the bubble wrap bits. Don't like the front bumper square lip.
Shame I'll probably never own one as we just bought a 5k mile old 15plate pre facelift. And I would hope for 10 years plus from it and hybrid/battery tech to have finally become common place and to fit my needs.
Looks like something from a 1980s sci-fi film, and not in a good way.
Looks like the current one with the new corporate face welded on. Another van with windows then.
Too many toys, I’m hoping the new Dacia MPV will be the spiritual successor to the original berlingo
Bare in mind that this will be the flagship with all the toys.
They will still do a basic one I'm sure. They always show the *xtr*
Looks quite sick. I'll never afford it though.
Oh dear on the corporate bumper/bonnet/lights/panels chucked on by the work experience kid...
Erm, it’s very styled isn’t it...
130hp 8 speed auto sounds ideal. But my 05 plate 2.0HDI needs to die first. Perfect replacement in XL format. Will give it a year for gremlins to be sorted though and pennies to be saved.
1.4m times more practical, urban crash bang whallop, cheap as a pint of prosecco and a battered saveloy and chips, don’t wash it for 3 years, £50 to get it through an mot..
The New Berlingo.

Agreed, I hired a car recently and was given a C4 "Cactus". What a completely stupid looking car.

This, and the photos of that Berlingo, look like a children's trainer design.
Someone, take away their crayons!
I like it, but I’m pretty sure that as with the current version it won’t be heavy enough to tow my caravan.
I’d love someone to make a Berlingo/Caddy/Connect size vehicle with a higher than 1800kg kerb weight @ towing limit.
I really like our Galaxy but it has spent most of the 2 months so far I’ve owned it with the back seats down, full of wet bikes, dog or work kit so something a bit more ‘utilitarian’ and less plush fabric would be nice.
1.4m times more practical, urban crash bang whallop, cheap as a pint of prosecco and a battered saveloy and chips, don’t wash it for 3 years, £50 to get it through an mot..
Except that it has a TINY boot and a high floor.
The dokker look great for biking but they dont bring them to uk - i wanted to like the duster - i even looked at the logan mcv as it seems to have a decent boot but the low roof meant bikes had to go on their side on top of each other......
for those that dont like the bubbles , the peugeot version will probably be more toned down , they seem to be the sensible adults choice with the citroen being a couple of grand cheaper and aimed at the youth/those trying to be youth - bit like a 50 year old wearing baggies and their baseball cap backwards
thing about the bubbles i think is - stops carpark dings.... my old car you didnt notice when people dinged your door as i had nice black bump strips (as does my new one owing to its rufty tufty persona peugeot have tried to give it) but the one we had in between came with colour coded bumpers and bump strips - what a pointless and entirely useless design idea for the vain. shows every door ding you ever got.
I couldn’t really get a feel for the XL. It will be a longer wheel base?
Press release says: (M) measuring 2 cm longer than the previous generation at 4.40 m, for a 2.78 m wheelbase. The lengthened XL version adds an extra 35 cm for a total length of 4.75 m and a 2.97 m wheelbase.
So 19cm longer wheelbase, and 16cm more overhang.
Assuming the press shots are the M version (with the rear wheels virtually at the corners) the XL should look nicely proportioned.
I also had a C4 Cactus as a hire car last year, I quite liked it. Citroen are at their best when doing the quirkier stuff.
mattbee > they do the Spacetourer in a 4.6m "XS" length, pretty sure it has a decent towing capacity.
Yeah, IMHO 4x4 make terrible bike cars, they're big on the outside, small on the inside and usually too high to mount a bike to the roof of easily.
What's wrong with the humble estate car?
Space tourer only has 1719kg kerb weight.
Does sound like a big caravan he has though .
Does Seem strange I assumed they kept kerb weight down so that the van version stayed to car speeds but that isn't the case as it's 2010kg minimum
It'll be interesting to see if it still passes the 'full bike in upright' test.
The tailgate looks similar to the current model, so hope so.
The longer version will suit the trend for longer bikes 🙂
Awful script for that ad though! ugh!
Looks like there's a bigger version called the SpaceTourer (edit: oh - it's been out a year already! - don't think I've seen one)

As well as versions from Peugeot and Opal:

The Citroen is by far the nicer looking imo
The larger van platform is also shared with Toyota (as the ProAce, and they do a "Verso" passenger version of it).
Have been watching secondhand prices for a while, it's good that there's some decent competition for the Transporter in that non-commercial / leisure van segment.
XL Berlingo though means a lot of bike/stuff-carrying ability without the extra width and height.
im not sure the XL berlingo achieves much over the current one which is already about 20cm longer than the m49-m59 model on the interior .... to the point its a pain in the arse , my previous one you closed the boot against the front wheel and bike was held solid no need to strap it in. my current one swallows a whole large 29er with room to spare so you need to strap it down to stop it rolling aboot 🙁
At least they've done a proper job of the XL (unlike the current van which as a tacked on rear).

Love my berlingo. When it dies I'll have one of these
That XL version is going to make a tidy little camper conversion. Should be available as a Vauxhall Combi as well.
I think it looks okay. Time will tell but the new Expert / Dispatch / Proace is a very nice van indeed so expect it to follow suit.
@bikebouy - that's the Duster, it's not a MPV.
@trail_rat - Having driven a petrol Logan MCV around Germany and Austria for 5 days last March, I wouldn't touch one no matter how cheap they are. They are cheap for a reason!! The Lodgy looks like more MPV like but the Dokker is just a cheap Kangoo
elshamino - that was my opinion when it test drove it for about 15 minutes... that was enough. friends bought one and after about a year regret it ....
you say cheap kangoo like thats a bad thing - especially since they stopped making a kangoo combi with windows and only seem to do a crew version which is prety spartan leaving the combi to mercedes citan (the expensive kangoo)
my one gripe besides the length (whcih i can live with)about my 2015 berlingo is they have sanitised what made it great as a bike car - all the hard plastic trim i had in my previous 2 has been replaced with carpeted shit , the floor used to be moulded rubber with no insulation under - these days it is carpet over thick insulation - so i ended up spending 60 quid on a fitted rubber boot tray and comes under the rear seats up to the back of the front seats (a tarpaulin is not an acceptable solution)
the old one used to get swept out once or twice a month and it was easy .... carpet sucks.
Caravan has a MTPLM of 1580kg. Means I need around 1800kg kerb weight ideally. Tried pulling it with a vehicle closer to a 100% match and it felt too much like the caravan was in control, even with stability control on the caravan & a nominal towing capacity much higher on the tow car.
However when the Mrs’ Focus dies we will probably look at the Berlingo again.
Had a Mk1 with the 1.9 non turbo engine years ago and whilst slower than continental drift it was such a practical car.
LWB version looks good, as does 130hp 8 speed auto. It seems to me like they're getting the marketing right for these now - these are the true 'sport utility vehicle' not some ridiculous tractor with 4WD and ground clearance.
Citroen has the best styling to my eyes though the silver highlights look better than the orange. Unpainted corners and side panels to stop dings make a lot of sense.
Questions -
- how do the rear seats disappear? fold? completely removable?
- whats the ride quality like? the agricultural leaf springs on our Caddy Maxi are the worst thing about it - just don't cope with traffic calming at all well, however slowly you drive over it.
I like the looks. Not sure if the over 70's market will though - may pick one up in 10yes time in the cheap with a wheel chair ramp conversion.
not sure of that new model but the current ones did away with the torsion bar in favour of a solid trailing beam with each side on their own coil spring and shock absorber.
ride and handling far improved over the previous model.
cant see them reverting to anything worse.
Citroen press gallery is here: http://int-media.citroen.com/en/psa_dam/4115/AC/view_gallery/135941/pag/1
So looks like middle row goes flat relative to boot floor. All removable. Folding passenger seat is nice for long things. Rear row (7 seater) looks like it's higher.
Is there any word on when these are going to be available I've asked my local Citroen dealer about this in the past but they don't seem particularly interested and don't carry the current Multispace.
So looks like middle row goes flat relative to boot floor.
but a bit shit for putting bikes on top of. Caddy is really good - flat floor under the seats, roll forward off the front edge into the footwells.
I had one of the first of the sliding door Multispace from 2001. It was the 1.6 petrol and nippy enough for me, and the nice soft suspension meant that it drove well on country lanes. The worst thing we found about owning it was the lack of interest from the dealer so we changed to a local specialist who was much more helpful. Have since moved onto a Focus estate, now a C estate (and a T5.1) but might be interested in the 8spd petrol XL in a couple of years as a do it all car.
Is there a petrol hybrid version? or an electric?
mr grim .
i had the same issue when i tried to buy a new one from a dealer pretty much had to force him to quote - i ended up buying used mostly for this reason , if my local dealer cannot be bothered with what should have been an easy sale what back up is he going to provide.
FYI the kirkcaldy motability centre is a citroen dealer and were very helpful on the phone, i just didnt see the point to buy a car from a dealer 200 miles away as no matter how helpful they are they were not going to be much help in future but your much closer to them and it may be of some use to you.
just ordered an estae car. Gutted, would love one of these
Cheers TR. I've got two Citroen dealers within 30 miles (Perth and Dunf), but they don't seem to stock or care about the van derived MPV's. I'll check out the place in Kirkcaldy. I only really care about dealer follow up for warranty issues as the garage in the next village do all the servicing with genuine parts and I know that they do a great job. The Landy just gets serviced at home.
If the new lingo is out in the next couple of months I might wait. Otherwise, I'll get one a couple of years old that's already taken some of the depreciation hit.
unless your looking for a petrol/hybrid(of which there appear to have been like 3 sold) one its hard to look past used.
we paid just a shade under half the build ticket price that was in the paperwork for the car for a 15 plate 5000 mile old partner outdoor 1.6HDI....
thats quite an initial depreciation curve
I don't think I'll need an XL unless I go for a micro camper. But it is good to see that they do one.
For those that haven't driven one in think that they drive well. Much better than I expected. I should have bought into them earlier.
Of course for those of us not towing the lower weight just means better mpg
@MrGrim - Stirling has an Arnold Clark Citroën dealer...absolutely terrible Sales Manager but everything else is good and they do tend to get the Berlingo in.
Also a local Peugeot dealer across the road, so likely to get their version in as well.
I don't think the first ones are out until September.
I know all about that Duster thingy..
I posted because I do reckon soon they’ll take over the wipe clean/chuck things in/brush the kids sick off the seats/leave filled with bikes and prams/take rubbish to tip at the weekend vehicles.
I went to see one week before last, the FIL is changing his almost crumbling/remophing into its core components Nissan Almera MPV shite box.
I was impressed with the Dusters interior, in boggo version it’s just wipe clean plastic, massive dials for heater and radio, a steering wheel, a stick that lets you change gear, seats that are made from some impenetrable vinyl, doors that open so wide you can almost hit the front lights with the door handle, carpets that a no more than a thick rubberised plastic impervious to muddy boots and cow shit.
It will make a damn fine Farm vehicle..
They just need to bring the guy who designed the Fiat Multipla on board and they're in with a shot of designing the worst looking vehicle ever made!

Thanks. I was actually there the other day. The sales lady I spoke to was great but they didn't have anything I was looking for at the time. If km79 is right about the release date then I'll wait a couple of weeks until the 18 plates are out then look around for something pre-reg on a 67 or 1-2 years old for a lot less than RRP.
I always had a soft spot for the Multipla to be honest. They just need to bring the guy who designed the Fiat Multipla on board and they’re in with a shot of designing the worst looking vehicle ever made!
I love how these new Citroens look. Genuinely interesting and really quite cool. The new C4 Cactus is actually a bit too conservative for my taste compared to the old one, but they'll sell more because it looks more like everything else.
The XL Berlingo looks really cool, it'd be an ideal extra van at my work. There will be a super basic hose down spec in the range somewhere.

if they remove the 4wd and drop the boot floor and give it a sensible sized boot you might be right .... but they would be better just releasing the dokker here as it would save them totally redesigning the duster into something its not.
Those Opel and Peugeot images on page 1 aren't the real thing - they are just artists impressions that have been knocking round for months (and the Citroen one wasn't very close to reality).
They all get launched at the Geneva show, production starts proper in May and in dealers around September.
XL looks very interesting - we have an L1H1 Dispatch Combi (previous shape to the Spacetourer) and it is 4.8m long so almost identical to the new Berlingo XL. Maybe ours is a smidge wider and taller, so we can get 6 people in two rows and a massive boot that takes 6 bikes and gear widthways with front wheels out. Really hope they do a full rubber floor (like in our Dispatch).
I notice they do a less trimmed Dispatch MPV (below the Spacetourer) that also still comes registered as an M1 passenger car - live in hope for something similar in Berlingo without dropping to the speed limit hassles of a crew van. They mention lots of storage cubbies in the new Berlingo so guess it will be a bit over-trimmed like the current Multispace - panelled out boot sides / wheelarches rob a lot of useful bike space.
Just hitting 100k on the Dispatch, so will give it a year or two for the bugs to get sorted then might try a Berlingo - or blag a go in Ampthill's 🙂 (will drop you a mail as I'm working down at Millbrook next week if you're about).
Likewise Mick-r going to give it a year for bugs to be ironed out and then plump for a 130BHP XL auto. Does the XL version always come with 7 seats?
Peugeot Rifter version announced: http://www.peugeot.co.uk/showroom/rifter/
Has the same "dials above the steering wheel" layout as a lot of current Peugeots.
They've done a nifty camper/4x4 concept for the Geneva show:
that dangel rifter looks the tits , i even quite like that lumo stripe.
i dislike the roof tent and roof bar mind - expect prices on dangel ones to be in the region of 30-35k though. its never been a cheap option
Multiplas drove better than they looked. Grippy go carts, low centre of gravity and wide profile, punchy 1.9 diesel engine. Seen some horrors underneath them up here in Scotland though.
Berlingo are good and would be in my top 3 bike wagons along with a Volvo X70 and a Honda CRV in terms of all round package - size, reliability (although maybe pushing it a bit with the Citroen 🙂 drive quality (Volvo I love you) and getting a decent example for under a few £k
I know this is about new Berlingo's and the like and it's probably what I will change my Duster for when they start hitting the 2nd hand market.
Had my Duster for 5 years now and done 40,000 miles - it's so few because it's spent a lot of time at the paint shop having rusty panels replaced.
Boot floor is too high and the back seats don't fold flat - means wheels out for 650b / 29ers or more than 26er / road bike.
Pale material in boot interior sides and roof lining means it's always grubby.
The alarm is a joke - goes off randomly for no reason.
If you get a AWD version 1st gear is so low that you start pulling away in 2nd, the clutch soon starts to judder after that. It's noisy and rarely does more than 40mpg.
The pedals are weirdly offset to the drivers seat so it's horribly uncomfortable after a couple of hours - probably a shonky conversion from LHD to RHD
Oh and depreciation means that if you buy anything other than 2nd hand you need to be able to run it into the ground and not care about changing it every 3 years.
Had email it's available now, website has spec, configurator, etc. Seems we get pretty much mid-spec upwards, no truly base models like they do in the rest of Europe.
https://www.citroen.co.uk/new-cars-and-vans/citroen-range/new-citroen-berlingo
By autoebid.com pricing, you can take about £5k off in discount, so starting comfortably under £15k.
XL version and some powertrain combos (like the petrol auto) not till next year.
Walkaround (in french - but youtube auto-translate subtitles get the gist) of a 7-seat XL here:
Rearmost seats have backrest fold horizontal, then whole seat can pitch forward on the front mountings so it's mostly out of the way. Or remove entirely for a clear flat floor. Pretty much like the old Espace or Galaxy before these fold-into-the-floor seats that eat up vertical space.
Nice, thanks for info...
We cracked and got an XL Dispatch crew van :-). They've done a great job of that so I expect the Bingo will be equally well sorted (same platform apart from back axle).
Prices have always generally been about 20% off list (we got 25% off the pre-VAT price).

Main dealer?
Any main dealer we've ever seriously talked to. We have a great family owned local dealer which we tend to prefer - if we could face using the bigger chains then we've actually been offered a smidge more.
I know they've been selling every end of line Berlingo Multispace they could get so there weren't any big clearance offers. Maybe early prices of the new one will be a bit firmer (maybe 10-15%). In a year I'd be expecting 20% (but not sure what Brexit will do). The "Vauxhall Dispatch" is supposed to be getting built in Luton, so maybe Berlingo / Combo will end up there??? (Dispatch is built at SEVEL in France, Berlingo in Spain)

That looks seriously good, I'll keep an eye out in ten years time when they come into my price bracket :P

(In all seriousness that ticks a lot of boxes for me)

Ouch, a serious step up in price...Berlingo has 2 options and a real difference between both, Rifter has 3 and a stark difference between Base and top, but not so obvious between mid and top.
Top end is very pricey.
Saying that, they do look good. My current one was the top-end but bought second hand so that'll be how the next one is bought...ideally XL...
I'm still liking them, just surprised at pricing as I've not looked at brand new for years. Seem well species though so not like a complete rip-off, just more expensive than my out-of-date assumption on price is.
broadspeed already has some fairly hefty discounts on offer
XL starting at £16,400 after £5k off. Seems reasonable
We've had one in the showroom at work for the last month, 'Flair' trim spec with the XTR trim option. Also have two of the lower 'Feel' spec ones on site.
The new Berlingo van will be arriving by the end of this year too, & the front end on that is just like the latest Dispatch van/Spacetourer people carrier rather than the Multispaces style
I'm interested in the new van version - XL crew van with grip control hopefully. Perfect for bikes and trips away.
