I know some denizens of this place like these sort of films, this is from around 30 years ago, with video taken from possibly a SAM missile unit.
The Herc pilots put up quite a show, at one point the pilot pulls a manoeuvre I used to watch them practicing at RAF Lyneham, which is where these pilots are from.

^^ Terrifying things!

Am I right in thinking you are only seeing a fraction of the bullets that are tracers?

That said, there is no need for tracers on those is there?

Educate me!

Educate me!

The camera on the block 1b Phalanx, which is what you’re seeing there, was built in Glasgow

the cost of those bursts in ammo alone is quite staggering.... if I was a raytheon salesman I'd slipping the insurgents a couple of quid as $50 mortar shell == $60,000 or so in ammo (IIRC and the utube vid was truthful 🙂 )

I’ve seen the Phalanx video before, it’s quite something, although I’m not entirely sure what it’s connection is to the Red Flag video I posted.

It's amazing what hercs will do, the G's they can pull make it very hard to stand up in one 😎 when doing low level silly stuff.. as much as the RAF have a bad habit for stopping for tea too often, they know how to fly a plane!

Anyone found the Buccaneer vid yet that the BBC allegedly showed?

Is that the one that took the top off a telephone pole?

Have a look on YouTube for the C130 gunship vids.

The herc video is just a training video where it deploys chaff a lot to break lock or seduce the 'missile', chaff doesn't help as much for VSHORAD systems like C-RAM, or Laser Beam Riding systems.

Technology has also moved on quite a bit since then as well in terms of tracking and targeting for air defence systems.

I remember seeing a C130 stood on its wingtips over Llyn Idwal yrs ago - some turn!

This reminds me of being on the back of a herc going into Basra doing a tactical landing.

Quite an interesting flight that was😃

Also reminds me of watching a special "k" taking off from Basra so low that it barely cleared the airport perimeter fence !!

Another good article on doing daft stuff with big aircraft

Watch This C-17 Engage Its Thrust Reversers In Mid-Air To Make An Extremely Rapid Descent. The reverse idle tactical descent is a pretty incredible way to lose altitude, and quickly

As a former herc pilot, we used to fly some pretty fun profiles into/out of Iraqi airfields ........

Were you flying them around 2004/2005?

We had to go to Al Udied and then onto Iraq via Herc.

I was also stationed at Akrotiri on VHAS from 05-08 so may have crossed paths.

I was in the back of one of those to go and fix a broken down Tornado.
Best roller coaster ride I’ve been on.

I also staged to Red Flag on C-130’s. That was a long and drunken journey 😀. We go snowed in at Bangor, Maine for 3 days. Each morning we would turn up to see the aircraft off and be sent away with a wedge of cash……straight to the bar 😀

Globemaster has the ability to reverse while on the ground under their own power.

Nearly 40 years ago when I was in the venture scouts we went to Link-Miles in Lancing and I got to fly the C130 simulator. I didn't do a bad job but got a bit overconfident and took a wing off in my attempt to fly under The Golden Gate Bridge 🙂
