Give me some ideas - must be properly waterproof, not necessarily a bike specific fit (looking for more of an all rounder) and no hood are my criteria. Cheaper is better obvs, but willing to pay for the right coat - what's out there?

no hood

You will end up with a running or cycling jacket then.

When you say 'no hood' do you mean no loose hood or no hood at all even if folded into the collar?

I would say Montane Minimus but it has a hood.

My paramo velez has a hood that can either tuck inside the collar or detach completely but I have a feeling the current model is just stash-able rather than removable. I never bother to keep mine attached.

If you're in no hurry second hand velez come up at good prices on ebay and because they're continually re-proofable they're a good value second hand buy.

I just bought a multi cam gortex from e bay £30 no hood but its camouflaged. Ideal for me at work, maybe not for you.

Altura Mayhem (at least the model I have) is cycle-friendly but if you don't have a gut like mine won't look too cycle-specific if worn casually, and the hood is removable.

Suggest away 🙂 - but so far I'm only finding ones with hoods (without going bike specific). I'd prefer no hood whatsoever, as the removable ones I've owned have been too bulky around the neck, but it's looking like a remote possibility.

Velez sounds like a good shout, ta. Like the Gravitas a lot. Maybe I just need to get over myself 😀

why wouldn't you have a hood on an outdoor waterproof jacket?

Are you after a

1. work type jacket for in the city where you might use an umbrella (hence no hood)

2. an out in the stix walking your dog/ shooting stuff jacket (you might wear a deerstalker instead...)

3. an up on a hill climbing/ walking/ cycling jacket? (needs a hood..)

I've got several jackets with hoods folded into the collar, a RaceFace snowboarding jacket and a Goretex USAF camo one I got cheap among them, and I can't say I've ever had an issue with the collar being especially bulky, and I'm only too glad to have a hood when the weather turns particularly manky, and my peaked cloth cap doesn't stop pissing rain from going down my neck.
