[Closed] Naive TV - DVD question
As a very old person these things are a bit beyond me, but my question is just this - our (old) DVD player has a SCART output socket, and our (new) TV only has HDMI input sockets. Is there a cable to connect one to the other, or do we have to get a new DVD player?
I have seen some converters but they weren't cheap - things may have changed though
A new DVD player would be easier & may be cheaper
Although I would really think about getting a new DVD player with HD upscaling. Even blueray players are coming down in price now. Especially if you're paying that much for a convertor.

Thanks. While I'm doing, should I get a BluRay player? Any recommendations? (The DVD player was just the cheapest in the shop ...)
This one on amazon:
(feeling a bit out of touch) SCART is out of date? I only just got used to it....
I don't wish to be rude, but are you sure there isn't a SCART socket on the tv? I thought that one was just about standard. If you're right I'll have to be even more careful getting a new tv for my mum. What make is the tv?
Or this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-BDP3000-05-Blu-ray-Player/dp/tech-data/B0026WNDV8/ref=de_a_smtd for bluray and DVD HD goodness.

There is one SCART socket, but it is occupied by the digibox from my cable company. No idea why that is the case, and it doesn't just plug into the aerial socket, but this way it works, and that is the key thing for wife and daughter! I'm mystified by TV stuff - it can't be that hard to understand - everyone has one - but it seems endlessly complicated!
Right, so another option would be a SCART switch thing that you can plug two or three SCART devices into (video player, DVD, cable box) then switch which one you want to watch. Should be cheaper than a new DVD player.
The only problem there is, unless you spend a lot of money, they're crap. Manual switchboxes are generally appalling quality, the picture will be awful.
I'd suggest that if you're throwing money at the problem, you'd be better off getting an entry-level Blu-Ray player. If you're buying discs in the future, it makes more sense to invest in something that'll look awesome on your nice shiny new TV rather than some stop-gap solution that's going to look baggins.
If budget is tight, next best option would be S-Video if your TV and digibox / DVD both have the connector - it's a good quality connection (little round multi-pin plug a bit like the old PC keyboard connectors), though you'll need to wire up sound separately with phono cables as S-video is picture only. Failing that, your simplest option might be to get a SCART > Phono block (looks like

). This is lower quality but should work.
Really though, your best, simplest option is to get a Blu-Ray player if you can afford it, it'll future-proof your system and it's the least faff.
Is there not another scart socket on the back of your digibox? Plug the DVD player into that and it should find its way through to your TV.

Think there is ... good plan, if not, then Cougar's suggestion is best, to just go for a blu-ray player

Good point well made.
