She does a fair amount of running (compared to me anyway). For a while now she's had funny squelchy noises from her knees when she climbs the stairs that seems worse after she's been for a run.

Now it's starting to become painful and the noisy knees seem to be getting noisier.

The doctor tends to just say "take some rest", in other words - stop running.

Anyone got any useful suggestions as to what it might be?

water on the knee ?

It would have to be pretty bad to slosh...

Get a physio to look at the structure/muscles to see if there's anything obvious but an MRI is likely to be needed if it's anythign to do with the joint itself.

Tell her to try some pelvic floor exercises.

Could be patellar maltracking - see someone who knows about knees & muscle balance. If it is some exercises & stretches will probably sort it out.
