so, decided to go for an S3, to replace my old iPhone, very happy with it, apart from the battery life. was having to watch what I was using it for today incase it ran out. since then I've turned off the generic 'sync' option in settings. Will this help?

Also turned off GPS when not using it. Got a battery life app and was shocked to see all the apps running in the background. Will turning off sync solve the problem, or do I need to keep on manually killing all these background apps?

also, whats a good music player? Noozy? Power Amp?

cheers

Screen is the biggest eater on mine. Then wifi. Turn power save on. Sync / push email will also use a bit.

A spare genuine Samsung battery is about £15 that you can swap in/out anytime.

Overall mine is a little better battery wise than the old iphone but still not ideal.

Hold down the silver button in the centre; it will bring 2 options, Task Manager & Remove All. If you go to Task Manager it will close all the apps that are running in the background. As above, turn down the screen brightness too!

Sorry to hijack...Does anyone know how to turn off push emails? For example if i receive an email to my hotmail it comes through straight away, where as all I want to be able to do is go into my emails and manually sync at my choosing. I run 2 email accounts on the email app thingy!

I get up to 2 days out of mine.
As above battery life is monitored already. Use that first.
Only use gps when you need it is the best idea most location stuff will go off the towers fine.

Switching signal is my normal culprit for killing battery. Are you out of signal a lot?

Have a look at power save mode and tune that. I still have sync every 10 mins or so but tend to drop anything data hungry to wifi only. Not sure if that helps.

I regularly get about 2 days from mine as well ....when I've been camping (no rechargeable power source )I've managed 3.5 days ..........but that's stretching it

Oh and inactive aps shouldn't consume much battery if any.

Also it lasts a lot longer at the bottom if the tank than I expected.

I for normally see a new phone bad battery period when I'm playing with it a lot.

REduce your screen brightness...I have GPS/Bluetooth and Mobile Data switched off unless I need them, next thing I do is reduce the screen brightness to <50% and set it to auto brightness - this does seem to make a huge saving in battery life...I see a noticeable difference if I turn the brightness up to max and leave it for 3 hours.

I have the S2 and if I don't hammer the wifi or mobile data, I can get 3 days out of it...I make calls and texts largely, check emails and web stuff if I'm bored...

Turn screen brightness down and you will extend battery life. Android apparently manages resources and background apps differently to a PC so I wouldn't worry too much about those...switch off what you don't need, same with the screen wallpaper - if you don't need the interactive version, turn it off...

I find Bluetooth is usually the culprit.

poweramp is good, sounds better than standard media player due to more control over graphic equaliser.

Get doubletwist as a music player and sync your music wirelessly (will also import itunes playlists so you can ditch that bad apple once and for all)

If you go to Task Manager it will close all the apps that are running in the background.

Apps don't run in the background. (Unless they're supposed to, like GPS loggers)

Bruneep's piccy reminds me why I much prefer Apple's icons over Android's any day. Can't stand the latter - tis like a silver bullet to moi.

I like that iphone 5 users come across as stupid. They dont answer the question - just something in their own universe. Usually that takes drugs, or well, ......

I own both, and a htc one x for work, and i have a close friend who owns a franchise run phone shop specialising in samsung and htc, so ud tell mr cadbury how to make a dairymilk?? Just experiance, and i did give my opinion on the op about how the playstore wont work unless u reset time and date munually, (a big problem for some people who dnt know about phones or miss the obv), thus the in my opinion bit on the end, no need to use profanities, free speech and all.

Cheers for all the advice 🙂

I've turned the screen right down and I can already see its made a massive difference to battery life.

Got poweramp. Using Airdroid to xfer music and other files wirelessly from Mac, nice piece of kit!

I'm not going to get into the whole android v iOS debate 😯
