We will be in touch
Just found out that a guy that used to work with me, that rode London to Paris with me a few years ago and that I used to shoot the breeze with about bikes, ride leading, and cycling generally died yesterday apparently during the Otley CC reliability ride. He was a good guy, husband and father of three kids.
He'd recently taken VR from his job to start up his own company.
Not really sure what I'm looking for in posting this other than to urge everyone to stay safe out on those roads. It doesn't matter how experienced you are, accidents happen.

****ing dangerous road cycling 🙁
Yeah my business partner knew him too (and rode with him a couple of weeks ago). He was close to tears this morning when we discussed it. And he had just ridden from Otley to Harrogate – he said he felt very uncomfortable getting on his bike this morning.
Very sad to hear this, young kids too. My thoughts are with you and his friends and especially his family.
Condolences on the loss of your friend bigG 🙁
Incredibly sad... Very sorry for your loss OP.
Terrible news.
So very sorry to read this.

Awful news thoughts to his family and friends
Absolutely gutted for his family, his mates, you and cycling in general
When will this stop? I'm sorry but it makes me so ****ing angry
Sadly another cyclist death, and another motorist has to live with the fact someone has died .
Very sad news. A police officer friend of mine was at the scene and she said it touched her.
So sad when this happens, thoughts are with you and his family.
Very sad for his family and friends.
Stay strong O.P.
We drove past on the a59 en route to newcastle and police had just blocked that road off. It was still closed when we came back past several hours later so we assumed there had been a fatal accident. Saw many other road riders that must have been on that ride. Bloody awful news.
Reinforces why I'll never take up road cycling, mtb is mostly only as dangerous as you chose to make it or you have a fair degree of control over your destiny, IMO with road riding you very much put your fate in other peoples hands. Particularly sad news with him leaving a young family.
Very sad mews. So sorry 🙁

^^. This. I started out on on road bikes (a custom-spec Carlton Criterium!) as a teen and was riding it until mid-twenties when switched to mtb. However, using bikes today for transport and utility is becoming IME notably more hazardous, and in the last decade. Too much traffic, too many inconsiderate/uneducated/dangerous drivers. Too many close calls lately. Have only been knocked off twice in my 36 years of cycling (once from behind, blew me over the bonnet, once dragged off on an island by a low-loader) and count myself lucky to be here. Now I stick to back lanes, cycle paths and mostly night-riding. Feels sometimes like copping out, but something needs to change on our roads.
That is so desperately sad.
Two of those poor children are the same age as mine & I can't bear to think what those poor little mites & his good lady wife are going through.
RIP to Craig & heartfelt wishes to his loved ones.
RIP to the guy, very tragic, especially for those left behind.
Makes most of us realise our livse or those of our familes can change very quickly.
Got nearly totalled myself this morning. Still dark enough for my lights to be on, going round a roundabout. That car coming from the left. He must have seen me. My head light is flashing straight at him. He must have seen me. Has he seen me? He's not slowing down. Now I'm at the intersection and he's still coming on. SHIT! I stamp on the pedal and just catch sight of him out of the corner of my eye - he's RIGHT THERE ON TOP OF ME. For one second, I thought he was going to ram straight into the back half of the bike. I just KNEW it was about to happen. Scary. As it turned out, my stamp on the pedal was just enough to get me past. He must have been no more than an inch away from the back wheel.I stopped and looked back. He was stopped right in the middle of the roundabout, just looking blankly at me. I emitted two loud short words at the top of my lungs, the first one in ripe Anglo Saxon. Rode off, shaking.
You can do all you can to stay safe, but there's still the one uncontrolled idiot that can bring it all to an end.
Bad stuff has happened. My sympathy to the family and friends. Sorry for your loss.
Condolences. Awful thing.
sad sad news.
never know when your time is up
Reinforces why I'll never take up road cycling
But you'll walk on the pavement?
But you'll walk on the pavement?
I'll ride on the pavement. Quiet lanes and Sustrans paths for me, in the UK.
RIP Craig, and condolences to those left behind.
Sorry to hear that OP, and condolences to his family.
I didn't know Craig but know many who did including my brother, just read his Facebook page message for his wife. So sad
This has really shaken me up. I was there 24 hours before, marvelling at the constant stream of cyclists going past.
Nobody deserves to go like that - he just went for a bike ride on a beautiful day.
