I really like the Nirvana MTV Unplugged album and have just realised my collection is lacking much else that’s similar.

What should I listen to next? Not necessarily live, but a similar laid back pained vibe?

Cheers!

Nirvana MTV Unplugged

Few things out there in that form and that good. It’s a stone cold classic in every way.

Biffy Clyro Unplugged at the Camden Roundhouse.  Effectively their tribute to the Nirvana Unplugged.

Pearl Jam Unplugged. Not sure if it's on CD though it's on vinyl and floating about online

Foo Fighters did an acoustic album "Skin and Bones", which is worth a listen.

Was pleasantly surprised by the 'Into the Wild' sound track, performed by Eddie Vedder

One of my favourite albums ever, such fond memories of my mum playing it in the house when I was young.

It's one of a kind though, so not really sure where to go from there.

If you like the laconic grungy sound, and don't mind lots of guitar noodling, try some Dinosaur Jr.

Sebadoh? The Vaselines?

+1 for Eddie Vedder's Into The Wild soundtrack.

The Alice in Chains unplugged. Prefer the Nirvana one (just) because it had more nteresting covers but they are both exceptionally good.

Mark Lanegan. Friend and occasional collaborator with Kurt Cobain.
Great if you like the dark blues/folk thing.

Worth checking out the Meat Puppets and the other MTV unplugged sessions (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots) and early Mark Lanegan solo albums (whiskey for the Holy Ghost, The Winding Sheet and I’ll Take Care of You) as mentioned above. Chris Cornell’s Song Book album too. I actually prefer all of those to the Nirvana unplugged album.

If you’re enjoying him he has a huge back catalogue of solo work, band work and collaborations. I’m waiting for his biography to come out at the end of this month. Should be an interesting read to say the least!

If you find you really like him check out these other bands/artists that he appears in or with.

Screaming Trees - Dust is the best album.

Gutter Twins - collaboration with Greg Dulli from Afghan Wigs

Soul Savers - He provides the majority of the vocals on their first two albums.

Isobel Campbell - They did three albums together.

Queens of the Stone Age - He appears on and wrote a few of the tracks on Rated R and Songs for the Deaf

I’m not obsessed with him or anything like that, honest!

The 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged equivalent is great too, much the same kinda (ish) laid back alt country vibe with female singer.

Cowboy Junkies. The Trinity Sessions.

Slightly different vibe, but any of The Bad Shepherds' albums.

Guns N' Roses. G N' R Lies. Oft maligned, but IMO better than it's given credit for.

I’ve got a Spotify playlist with the imaginative name Mark Lanegan and it’s on there along with the Duke Garwood stuff 😀

Songbook, Chris Cornell

Not quite in the same vein but Pawn Shop by Brothers Osbourne is quite listenable.

I'm coming back to this thread in the morning to add some stuff to my workday playlist. 😁

Try ‘white lies’ for some smooth electronic band pain.

Also try ‘brand new’ with their last few albums for more rock band (their first albums start more pop punk / emo but still good songs when they do newer versions).

It's a big ask.

For passion, intensity and pathos I can't think of anything off the top of my head that's close.

Some Neil Young stuff maybe? And he is the Godfather of Grunge after all.

Someone's already said Counting Crows - Across A Wire, so I'll go with Band of Horses - Acoustic at the Ryman.

Edit to add: Ooh. Cowboy Junkies got a mention too - Trinity Sessions and Trinity Revisited, the latter only for Natalie Merchant's bloody brilliant vocal and piano on To Love Is To Bury.

Don't forget that Neil Young's Archives is still currently free to listen, that's all of his considerable output since the 70's plus Buffalo Springfield and not forgetting Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Came here to suggest pearl jam and blind melon.
Try The White Buffalo-hogtied like rodeo, mellow but good. Also sublime did an acoustic album which although a fair portion sounds like it was recorded drunk at a party is good!

During lockdown I've hit ebay for a new amp - and I intend to give these archives a hammering over the weekend.

(Starting tonight, once Leftism on Tim's Listening Party is over.)

@funkmasterp - talking of Dark Mark, his autobio comes out in a few days, you probably knew this already... just read an excerpt from it in Q Mag and if that's anything to go by, it'll be hilarious. 😀
