As a proud father of a 1 week old, I was wondering if the ST crowd know of any music can help the little one get off to sleep.
I'm trying to stop the mother-in-law from picking him up everytime he makes a single noise

The Carpenters seem to do the trick. As for the Mother-in-law - tell her to get a grip.

Mozart. And it improves their brain and language skills as they sleep too.

Oh no wait, that was amistake. Sorry if you've gone and bought some in the meantime. Let me send you some cash to compensate.

Honestly, try anything, they're all different. Some people swear by quiet (low volume) white noise even (like a detuned radio) - you have to remember that at a week old there's some scary shit out there - most of what you see in a day is the first time you've seen it after all - and appropriate sensory deprivation helps the brain to quieten down.

My eldest particularly liked The Libertines though, even in the womb she'd kick wildly to 'Don't Look Back Into the Sun'

The Stranglers Greatest hits worked with our eldest.

Sorry but a Classic FM chill out CD has sent all our three off to sleep at night.

Doesn't seem to be any standard, apparently I went through a phase of only going to sleep with the Stranglers playing. A friend of mine's wee one really does like Slayer- just quietly though. But I reckon most kids will prefer something soothing with a fairly steady beat.

+1 on lullaby. we've also been given some baby mozart cds. our first little un is 19 days old and the music seems to work ok, and you find yourself nodding off as the sleep deprivation is immense.

oh, i know what you mean about the mother in law. why the **** do all women want to pick up & nurse a sleeping baby! he's settled in the moses basket and then starts to cry when being picked up and touched/strocked/patted and they say 'oh, what's the matter little one?' i've upset a few of the family by saying 'you disturbed him from his much needed rest you daft mare!'

well we did walking up and down the bedroom and singing
but also

try googling me thinks "babysoother" - just had a quick look but couldn't find the tape - sounds like mums heart plus a milking machine pumpimg away, like back in the womb - does the business

Baroque Lute Music (Paul O'Dette) - absolutley brilliant melodic calming music. been using it since birth and both my kids love it. they now ask for it when they are tired and want some reassuring music to fall to sleep to.

cool thanks for the advice, I'll try them all over the next few weeks! (including Slayer, although I don't think the wife will agree)

Mother-in-Law has been put in place 😀
