I was clearing out the garage at the weekend and found a box with old kitchen stuff in it. This included 30 mugs. I've just counted the mugs in the kitchen, 28 of them.

58 mugs.

There are two of us.

There should be a worldwide ban on the sale of new mugs for a year.

yup too many here to, all i get is that we don't have enough kitchen storage, however, i don't feel there is the need for the 30 cups/glasses etc when we rarely have more than 1 visitor at a time

6 Tumblers

As for storage that is what the dishwasher is for

There are two, sometimes three of us here that do the Dyfi Enduro, that's three new mugs a year, which just about matches the breakages (stone tile floor...) but then there are Christmas presents of mugs (why? not that I ask for them...) - so that's about 25 mugs at home and who knows how many there are at Singletrack.

Had a similar problem, but took a couple of dozen in to work, when it was decided not to renew the disposable cup supply there.

If there weren't  so many mugs in the cupboard then I wouldn't be able to play Creme Egg Bingo.

My wife has a habit of hiding goodies in cupboards so that the kids don't eat them. Quite often, she then forgets all about them.

This means that, if you randomly select a rarely used mug from the cupboard there just might be a Creme Egg in it. It's one of lifes little joys when you do hit the jackpot.

If in doubt my mum buys a mug for each of us for Christmas. Rip off £20 Emma Bridgewater ones too.

I regularly purge our kitchen cupboards so no more than one shelf is allowed, otherwise they go to bin / Charity shops...

My wife has an obsession with the cath kidston ones. Although they're a nice size and a good mug to drink from I'm not convinced we need 20 of them on display on a tea shelf!

Our kitchen cupboard is at the point that if all the mugs are clean they don't fit in the cupboard.

I think we need to recycle some of the glasses too.

My issue with mugs is that the vast majority are too small. A mug needs to hold circa 500ml to hold it's head up high in the cupboard. Any less is just playing about. I open the cupboard and see a sea of thimbles - I only have a few go to mugs, the rest are just there to gather dust and give to guests you don't want hanging around too long.

edit - unless it's a proper coffee, then all mugs in chain coffee shops are too big. Cappuccino mugs a laughable big and too milky.

What you need is a tea pot 😉

At a guess, probably 2 dozen mugs in our house. Will do a count tonight.

There are two of us in the house. So while a large amount, not an Imelda Marcos level of hoar.... collecting, you might think.

I have maybe 4 hot drinks per year. Usually if I am on deaths door. My contribution to the mug collection have always been gifts from other people. No idea why people give me mugs, they all know I don’t do hot drinks (and frequently pass comment on this)

Mike. I can only assume, with the quantities you have listed, that you have one sentimental mug that moves with you, wherever you live or you broke a mug in that first month. Which is it?

Mugs are seemingly the fallback gift when the givee can't really be arsed to think about what someone might like.

I got bought one recently which has a picture of a Dill pickle on it in and says 'I'm kind of a big dill'. I have trouble drinking from it due to the involuntary hilarity tremors obvs.

I've drastically reduced my muggage now though as I found that many were compromised in the Aeropress-compatibility stakes and so had to go of course.

A relative asked for one of those Emma Bridgewater ones for Christmas. Hideous, bulbous, ugly overpriced thing.

4 ikea ones that fit nicely on top of the coffee machine. There's only two of us so why not keep it simple?!

I tried to instigate a one-in one-out policy but that fell on its arse and remains a two-in one-broken policy. We even have Christmas and Easter mugs that come out once a year (but don't actually get used).

We have far less than we used to, but I fear it may be time for a couple of the mugs to "fall down the stairs" or "walk into the door" #nudge #wink

I keep trying to get Mrs Madhouse to chuck some mugs or glasses out but apparently we need them 'just in case' (just in case of what???).

Thing is, this then seems to trigger some kind of purchasing reflex and we end up with more of the things! I'm going to have to sabotage a shelf or two at the current rate.

Unfortunately we live reasonably close to Anta. Their mugs are decent enough, but clunky IMO.

But every time we go there, somehow a new mug appears on the shelf at home.

What's worse is that they all get used.

Meanwhile, I have the one fine china mug which I clean after each use, and I really don't see the need for the multitude.

What's stopping you from doing it?

@madhouse - broken mugs can be used as crock for the base of your plant pots. Just break a few by "accident"

Recently purged the old easter egg and random mug collection and instead went for 6 lovely Le Cruset mugs, totally over the top in both weight and cost (they were from the outlet shop though). But I'm fancy like that and they look good!

We have 2 shelves wedged full of them, must be 50 or 60, but no room for anything else. I always use the same one though, a Mr Bump mug, which doesn't even have a space to live because it's always either in the wash or getting drunk out of

I had to ban my wife from buying the damn things as she is with so much other stuff she'll buy something when there's no bloody room to put anything. I'm sure our house is going to feature on one of those hoarders programs in the future.

I sneak the odd mug into the bin when no one is about.....its the only way to control the situation!

Almost all of our mugs are Brighton Big Dog or CyB Enduro ones. We have one each of each for every year since about 2012, I have a couple of years earlier, less a couple I left in the lake district. There's a third one from whichever year they had pink at Big Dog because someone from our club left one behind, we took it back but they never owned up.

I like it. Even if we do have about half of them in a crate in the loft. Maybe I should institute 'summer' and 'winter' collections.

Sounds like what Convert needs is one of these

I’m with on the quantity issue. I have to have at least 3 coffees in the morning before I can even contemplate leaving the house

I'm not going to count them, but I reckon we have ~20 mugs for two of us! 😮

Although it's in-line with the silly amount of pots/pans/cutlery etc. we have, way too much for a couple in a moderately sized flat.

I love a mug, the more random the better. I'm not talking about ones with quirky sayings or whatnot, rather those advertising niche products or businesses etc. The more banal the better. My favourite is a "Fram Filters" one. Only my most esteemed guests get to drink from it although they don't usually recognise the privilege as tbh it looks like something I might have stolen from a garage.

I don't even know what kind of illness would make anyone think that 2, let alone 6, matching mugs was a good idea. Are you Hyacinth Bucket?

Over 100 mugs dotted around the kitchen. There are 2 of us, and yes, my wife has issues.

I'm starting to feel less concerned now. Perhaps the next Blue Peter appeal (does that still exist?) should be to collect old mugs and send them somewhere. Maybe for use as a building material.

I think tupperware pots (or their lids) must be the larvae for mugs.

No other way to explain how the former keep disappearing and the latter multiplying.

Espresso cups - that's another thing, cos you don't buy one, you need to buy at least 4 at a time. Even if you live as a hermit in a cabin.

I just counted 28. There's two of us here who drink hot drinks. There's probably more & that's not including hand made pottery ones or espresso cups.

Every so often I just cull the mugs from the cupboard, so that I can close the cupboard door.  Any with chips go, any I don't like go.  I have a habit of paying a lot for nice mugs (Iittala teema are my favourite) to which my OH complains at the cost, however they are always the mugs she chooses to use!  Actually since son no. 1 broke  couple, time for some more!

If we're adding in espresso cups, another 10 to my total.

I’ve got a bunch of mugs that I’ve collected over the years that aren’t going anywhere, as most of them came from concerts, there’s a couple of Elbow mugs, a Portishead one, a couple of Kate Rusby mugs, there’s one with a Batman logo I’ve had for over twenty years, a lovely one from a Rothko exhibition at Tate Modern, a huge one with ‘Not jumpy, not grumpy’ printed on the side, an almost as big X-Files mug...     others bought by the folks over the years have suffered a fairly regular attrition rate, and as there’s only two of us now, and rarely any visitors in any number, I think some of the old family mugs can quietly disappear...
