Can you make a custom toolbar on current versions of either of these? I'd like to set them up with a one or 2 button toolbar only, maybe Print/Save As and that's it. The other toolbars can be deleted or hidden out of sight.

It is for an elderly person for whom the whole idea is to have a word processor that will not confuse them... hence the limited functions on the toolbar.

I don't think you can get rid of the ribbon on MS-Word.
Effing thing.

Also look at Google docs (desktop) and Zoho.
or why not the MS accessory, Wordpad ?

You can get rid of the ribbon in word (2010)

Right click and 'customise ribbon' then simply uncheck everything

SlowJo you can do this in Office, you the have the choice of cutomising a quick access toolbar or the larger ribbon (maybe ideal size for an older person)

Open Office [v3] completely customisable:

As Mossimus said you can do exactly the same thing in Word 2010 - create a custom ribbon (e.g. called 'Simple'), add Print and Save to the ribbon, then disable all the others.

...but as per Moses it could be a bit sledgehammer/nut if the requirement is just to produce very simple docs - there are probably better/cheaper ways than stumping up for Word/Office.

I have had some success on Open Office, just have to work on icon sizes and setting the default font, getting it to open on boot up then I am there.

Slowjo:
View>Toolbars>Customise

Then click on New to create a new toolbar and add whatever buttons you want - the ones you want are in the 'Documents' category.

You can also choose icons only, icons with text, etc.

Once everything is set, in View>Toolbars make sure that only your new toolbar has a tick next to it. You can also selectively disable menu items as well.

That's what everyone thinks before they have to do some more involved work with it!

We're not going to get more complicated here than simply writing letters.

It's got to be a lot more involved for Open office not to be a winner. Good app especially as it's free.
