Anyone good with Thunderbird. Email not wine.
+The cat wandered over the keyboard and now the left shift button does * that when I hit it and doesn't swap lower case to upper case. +The right one stick a + in front of everything. +I guess its a key combination but +++I can't find it.

Have you tried getting the cat to walk back over the keyboard going the other way? Bound to work! *+*
Is it *just* Thunderbird?

Check that your keyboard hasn't been catcidentally flipped into a different language layout:
