My work phone has a COPE profile (Corporately Owned, Personally Enabled) so that we can use it for both work and play, and I've decided to take advantage rather than buy a new Android (just transferring my personal number to a cheap esim to use as a second sim on the work phone)
I've manually transferred most of my stuff from my Android phone to the iPhone, however I've fallen at the last hurdle. When I signed in to Whatsapp, it searched iCloud for the backup and obviously couldn't find it, and sat there with the ultimatum...continue and forever lose your whatsapp chat history 🙄
I discovered I need to use 'Move to iOS' app to transfer the Whatsapp history, however this needs a new or factory reset iPhone. I can factory reset (albeit a huge hassle) but I had a google and it sounds like there is a very good chance that the corporate device management controlling my phone will defeat the Move to iOS process during setup, or, it'll work but completely mess up the corporate re-install of about 100 work apps.
So my question is, could I beg/borrow a dusty old iphone that can be factory reset, 'move to iOS' my whatsapp history, then backup to the cloud, and then set up whatsapp on my work iphone where it will find the whatsapp backup!?
Probably but how clean and suitable is your WhatsApp chats and other personal stuff?
Personally, I'd be very wary of that - not because I'm up to not good but the chat from mates after they've had a drink or 6 can end up being schoolboy humour...I wouldn't be keen on work seeing any of that or the images stored on the device.
Thats a good shout but I think they are pretty clean, to be honest I had to exit a couple of work chats that seemed to be a contest to post the most outrageous stuff possible!

Ah I must be getting old, not heard of that before !
Is it essentially a dual eSIM thing ?
At 5pm does the work bit literally switch off?
It’s separate to an eSIM.
If you see the Do Not Disturb profile, it allows you to set up additional profiles alibi alongside which changes the look of the phone, what apps can send notifications etc. You can toggle it in the quick access settings, or you can set up schedules/automation i.e it will switch to home mode when you get home based on location.
I put an eSIM on to keep my number, but generally I’ll just leave it on the work sim and downgrade my plan.
Edit: just noticed I don’t need to block work contacts, I can just disable incoming calls on the primary/work sim and just allow personal ones when I’m on the personal profile. So there is an advantage to using a dual sim with cope profiles.
Well just an update for future googlers...
Using a borrowed, non-corporately owned iphone worked fine to get my whatsapp chats onto Apple and uploaded into icloud. Once that was done I signed into whatsapp on the work phone and the whatsapp history is there 🙂
I also discovered that you don't need to mix up/combine your personal and work phone contacts. Instead you can tell the Apple contacts app to look to other contact lists, so its displaying work contacts that are sync'd from Outlook, and personal contacts synced from Google Contacts. Just had to manually mark all the Google contacts to use my secondary (personal) esim so that they don't get diverted to voicemail when I'm not at work.
I haven't bothered as we have enough messaging apps at work, but there is also the option to install Whatsapp for Business alongside normal Whatsapp, to keep work and play contacts/chats separate.
