It looks like all your handy telephone interview advice paid off and I have been offered the job in Glasgow, it was either doing it naked or touching myself so thank you for the tips. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it.
I'm a pansy southerner and have never been further up' norf than Manchester. So what's it like?
Where are the decent and cheap places to live, close to the good biking, sunny beaches, excellent nightlife and pretty ladies?
I have a feeling I'm in for a very big shock and interesting life experience, but you only live once and possibly not for very long being a southerner in Glasgow.
Where is the job based and how will you travel to it? Also what would you say is an acceptable commuting time to work?
This will let us help you out. You'll like it here.....
The job is in Cathcart. I plan to commute by bike as in road bike, so under 10-15 miles. Possibly car or motorbike in the wet and cold. Hope that helps.
Hi - Is it at Scottishpower or Weirs? Where are you planning on staying in Glasgow (roughly)?
Let me know if you have any ideas of where you think is okay and I'll give you some advice. Grew up on Glasgow south side (where Cathcart is).
Glasgow is a really nice place despite the reputation it sometimes gets and you are quite well placed for some good riding. I'm in East Kilbride and I can get to most of the stanes (apart from K'tree) in less than an hour and a half tops. You've also got good access to Argyll area for more good natural trails.
The west end is also really nice for nightlife etc...
Hmmm south side, all beyond my realms of knowledge. I spent 4 hours and 170 miles of driving searching south of the city for houses on Sunday. Definitely cheaper than the commuter area north of the city but some dodgy places to look out for for sure.
As a southerner you'll be fine so long as you dont go around loudly proclaiming your support for all things English ๐ As a northerner (just outisde manchester) having arrived here 12 months ago I can honestly say its a very friendly city and a great place to be. It does rain an aweful lot, mostly horizontal ๐
Bringing your MGB with you?
Yes, Scottish power. I don't have a clue where to stay yet; I was only offered the job today. I will be looking at student accommodation as it is a gap year job and doesn't pay a huge amount.
I think the MGB is either being garaged in dry storage if I can afford it or sold ๐ but hopefully the first. I think it would rust to bits in Glasgow and I don't fancy the 7 hour drive getting it there.
There are lovely areas on the South Side. There's also Renfrew, Inchinnan, Erskine etc and the like. Give me an idea of how much rent you want to pay.
I'll also ask around to see if anyone knows of a flat/house or if anyone is looking for a tennant.
In fact, EK could be a good move.....
if its student accomodation you are after you could do worse than shawlands/battlefield which would be walking distance to scotty power with good links to the rest of the city and plenty going on at night.
checkout http://www.list.co.uk/ for flats and house shares etc
If you want to let us know when you get a bit more finalised with your digs and we'll help you out with a "yay", "nay" or a "maybe". Some nice bits and some not so nice. As a rule nicer=dearer, but not always as clear cut as that.
Good luck and all the best!
Nick
