Just after some input from the STW hive. Junior (14) has asked if Me & mrs buzz can come up with a list of movies that we reckon are essential viewing for him and his mates to watch over winter.
We started his movie education a couple of years back with stuff as varied as Casablanca, Bad day at black rock, the breakfast club and Alien. He enjoys watching old and new movies and wants to introduces his friends to the pleasures of older films.

Tonight we've started a list including - High Noon, some clint eastwood stuff, The Great Escape, Platoon, Bill & Teds excellent adventure, American Graffiti

I'm after some suggestions of what you would consider a must see movie and maybe why you think it is - more Desert Island movies than Desert Island discs. Obscure stuff most welcome.

intouchables - brilliant film, my son watched it with me (older though at 20) and was 'blown away' by it - his words. based on a true story it's just a great film about human relationships (real friendship as opposed to couples). Can't recommend it enough - and it has fast cars and a greats sound track too. It is subtitled and very funny as well as moving but not in any overly sentimental way

Romancing the Stone - old school Saturday matinee entertainment
Jaws - ignore the rubber shark and watch a young Spielberg mastering the craft of directing
Goodfellas - not sure I'd want another parent giving the ok for my 14 yo to watch this, but it's another masterpiece in filmmaking with a magic soundtrack for some added musical education
Butch Cassidy - a Western for those who don't care for westerns, with Redford and Newman showing how to steal the show
Reservoir Dogs - again I don't think this is suitable for all 14yo kids, but the introduction of Tarantino to cinemas was arguably a very significant moment
Blues Brothers - an example of how a fantastically entertaining film can still do relatively badly at the box office
Citizen Kane - the go-to film for film buffs
Did Anyone mention Bladerunner?

Give us more criteria otherwise l'll be here all day 🙂

As a cyclist, you must show him... ON ANY SUNDAY
A great documentary, with the classic Bruce brown style, he also made Endless Summer the surf movie. It's a window on another era.

Check out the damned early BMX racing.

scanner darkly! Be careful with him and the movies. I started young with movies that were mature and serious (basically the good stuff), I think it made me realise how little time we spend on the planet a little too soon in my life...

good point ryderredman. A parent can draw their own boundaries with their own kids, but if his mates are watching these recommendations with him I'd err on the side of caution. Some kids might not be as thick-skinned as yours, or vice versa for that matter.

With that in mind, here are some fun suggestions:

Beetlejuice
Airplane
Blazing Saddles
Flight of the Navigator (perhaps 14 is a bit too old, but I loved it)
Cocoon - under-rated in my opinion, even thought it's arguably a bit schmaltzy

...and some good rites of passage/young adult stuff:

Stand By Me
Before Sunrise
Lord of the Flies
The Graduate
Good Will Hunting
IF

I've heard Cinema Paradiso is a good 'un, but to my shame have not seen it and finally, not "that" old but a true belter - and rarely mentored in these types of thread - "Life is Beautiful". Superb.

Seven Samurai

My dad made me watch that when I was about 10 years old and it triggered a life long obsession with Japanese and Samurai culture and history

thanks guys - there's a few in there that I'd forgotten about.
He's a very mature 14yr old and loved Leon & Nikita (the real one - not the crappy american remake) - he also liked district 13. He enjoys a good mix of films - not just the standard action stuff.
I keep remembering films and have been scribbling them down when I remember - Silent Running was one that sprung to mind in the last 5 mins.
Please keep the suggestions coming and I'll compile a nice long list in a couple of days - I'll probably post it up so it can be added to.

Surely all 14 year old boys enjoy a bit of Bruce Lee kung-fu action? Therefore "enter the dragon" gets my vote 🙂
