I want to convert a MOV file to AVI! My dosy Canon only does film in MOV, bit of a pain really.
Any recommended software [pref free] as I only want to do it once or twice.

Think Handbrake does the same thing.
Also try virtualdub (on windows).
Regardless of what you do, read up on codecs and containers. Mov is just a container, as is Avi. Is your issue the container or codec? You may not need to transcode (with associated quality and time penalties).
does it keep the files in the full resolution?
Does what? virtual dub? Yes if you tell it too. It'll allow you to convert the container (if possible) without re-encoding the video etc (or just change the audio codec etc).
http://projects.lowtech.org/openmovies/codec.html is out of date but has the basics. (found with a quick google, I recommend more reading!)
