For just over 3 years I have been using a Moto G4 mobile phone and its been fantastic.

Now its time to replace it, so are the G7 & G8 phones of a similar quality?

Or any others worth looking at?

I prefer to buy my phones sim free, so a budget of around £150

G7 plus. I'd gladly pay lots for bike parts but not a phone.

Huawei P30 lite seems pretty darn good so far. Purchased recently from Amazon for £180.

I am waiting on the G8 plus to reappear... I say that - it was out until a fortnight ago and now it is just re-appearing for sale (Secondary seller from Amazon, 7 day delivery from JL).

I think with the upgraded camera it is worth it over the G7, however might be slightly out of your budget...

Following. I have a G3 with a dodgy charge port so also looking at G6 G7 type alternatives around the £150-£200 mark. My problem is that the newer Moto phones aren't waterproof like the G3, and to me that is a pretty important thing to have. Has anyone got any experience of the Chinese brands like Ulephone or Doogee. They have some pretty decent specced phones in their waterproof/armoured range that would be suitable for me but not sure if they are worth a punt

Got a G7 Power about 3 months back after it was recommended on here. Excellent phone for all my requirements. Netflix, Spotify, Zwift companion..... 2-3 days off a charge, 6.2" screen. And best of all,, Still £129 on John Lewis
https://www.johnlewis.com/ie/motorola-g7-power-sim-free-smartphone-android-6-2-4g-lte-sim-free-64gb/p4039474

Have tried a good few of the Chinese types but there's always something that doesn't work correctly with each phone (usually bluetooth remote control functions or the likes). Switched from an iPhone 7 to the Moto G7 and much prefer the G7 (bigger screen, battery life, and value for money).

Try the G8+ - my wife and are are both very pleased with ours. Bargain for less than 200 quid.

My G7 power wee wees all over the G3 it replaced.

For a spin it goes in a sandwich bag which has worked well against the elements.

3 people I know have bought one after having a play with it.

Nokia 6.2 worth a look, available for about £180. It is Android One, so should get some updates.
I have the 6.1, it is nicer than the Moto G I had previously.

I replaced my G4 with a Huawei P Smart (30?) .
It was a good upgrade. It took a few days to get used to it, but it is a good replacement. 2 days battery life, good camera, a lot faster etc.

Has anyone ordered the MOTO G7 plus from John Lewis? All the info on net about the phone says it is NFC enabled, but the spec sheet on the JOhn Lewis website say it is not? Just wondered if anyone can confirm one way or the other if it has NFC?

I have a G7 Plus (bought from Currys) and it has NFC. I don't think the Play or Power models have it - but the Plus models have a few extra bits.

They might not officially be waterproof bit my g7 power jas gone swmming more than once. By swimming i mean dropped in fast flowing burns while I'm out inspecting railway bridges.

That is good to know Joshvegas. It is one of the things holding me back from ordering the G& Power. That and the apparent lack of NFC.

The power definitely does not have nfc.

More annoyingly has no digital compass which is a bit frustrating walking in circles to find out which way to go 😁.

Yes, really a proper compass is needed for GPS work - for me, it's a needed feature for any phone (my G5 does not have one and it's annoying as joshvegas points out).

Had an Ulephone - the one reviewed on here a while back. It was shit... Poor battery life even though it had a massive battery. Finger print sensor never worked first time.

Then a Nokia 7.1. That was good. Until an update bricked it.

Now on a G7 Plus. I like it. Almost pure Android, decent battery and screen. Camera could be better.

My Voda contract is up this month. I'm cancelling and getting a sim-free G7 power (to replace an A5). Probably going on GiffGaff £12 deal with it.
It doesn't have NFC. I don't need that, but you might...?
