First due on a car's third 'birthday' or do you get three years and then have to MOT it on the 4th birthday?

Cheers

FYI - you can get it MOTd from a month before the end of current MOT but the issued MOT runs from the expiry date of the current MOT. I do this as it gives time to sort issues.

if you get an mot test before the current one expires does the new certificate run from the test date? or from the expiry date of the expiring one?

Buy a new car today (14th March 2012) and the car would need an MOT on 14th March 2015 (or before).

You get 3 years from new, then it needs an MOT every 12 months thereafter.

You can get the mot done up to a month before the expiry of the previous test (or 3 years from registration date if it's the first mot), and retain the original mot expiry date.

However if you get it done more than a month in advance, then expiry date is 12 months from the date of the test.

Up to 1 month in advance you can present your MOT cert when being tested. The new MOT will start from when the old one expires.
