I've got a standard monitor cable connecting my laptop to the TV (32 inch LCD Sony Bravia)so I can watch internet and iPlayer thru the TV.
I can't get the screen to replicate on the TV so it;s full size. I've reset the resolution to the largest available and although it's larger the image only fills about half the screen.
Is there anything I can do about this?
Try rebooting the computer with the tv connected & then go to source on the TV.
Scroll down & there should be a PC one. Select.
Thats what i do with my Samsung.
Pretty sure that's just iplayer for you. Same behaviour for iplayer only on mine and my parents tvs. U tried 4od? That works fine.

What's the resolution?
Take a photo of what it looks like?
Re reading your post I could also interpret it as even the desktop just fills half the screen. If your monitor res is up as high as it will go can you change the tv res down?
Some TV monitors don't do native resolution when used with a PC. I bought a Toshiba that would only do this. It went back and was replaced with a samsung.
You'd expect a sony to be able to full res though especially these days.
if you have a dvi out you can buy a dvi to hdmi cable and go in through that socket, then run 1366*768 on your laptop.
