so my phone has signal and a wee arrow indicates that data is moving.
why does opera then tell me there's no data...presumably a problem with its servers?

Desire? If so, turn off Mobile Network in settings then turn it back on again.
You will once more be able to surf the www whilst taking a crap/break in the bogs.
