So, do I stick with my basic text and calls type phone for £15 a month or do I get dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century with a smart phone that cost twice as much per month to get the same calls and texts? or worse, get an iphone (well, I already have a mac book) and get even less for my £30 a month as well as paying for the flipping thing up front?

You could get a smartphone second hand then a get a month rolling contract on something like tesco mobile, £15 for 750 minutes, unlimited txts and data (500MB). Well that's what I've just done anyway.
