What's the situation with going to a minor injury unit with an injury which is a few weeks old, but not getting better?

I remember many years ago I had to get a referral from my GP to get an "old" injury looked at in A&E as they wouldn't otherwise treat something which was more than a couple of days old. Is policy different nowadays, or is it different with minor injuries as opposed to A&E? It seems a waste of my GPs time (when I can get an appointment in 3 weeks time) to have to go via him first for something I'd think he'd have to refer me on for anyway.

It used to be the case that over 7 days it stopped being an injury and became an illness (from nhs 111 perspective at least). Maybe give 111 a ring and see what they recommend as they will have the inclusion criteria for the local miu/ wic etc

Just say you did it a few days ago.

The one I use (Leeds) seem to be fine - I was there a couple of weeks ago with a fresh (that day) injury and they gave their diagnosis and advice but said if it wasn't improving in a week to come back - I actually left it a few days longer and it was 12 days post injury that I went back and they were happy to look at it.

I think the one of the purposes of minor injuries units is to alleviate the pressures on other services, especially A&E so they will be much less likely to turn people away than A&E would.
