Winter Olympics almost upon us. Heading to Milan in February to watch the ice hockey quarters. May even get some skating in. Any recommendations for areas to go/stay/avoid? Thanks

Not sure about the winter or sporty aspect, but on my one visit to Italy I thought Turin was far nicer to prettier than Milan, and they are only a short train ride apart if you want to have a day out.

I am often told that I am on wrong on this.

They used to day that Milan was like Manchester. I think that's doing a disservice to Manchester.
I consider Milan to be like Warrington, it's easy to get to lot's of great places from.

Como is only a short hop north.

We flew in to Milan Bergamo years ago and Bergamo was really nice so we just stayed there.

I spent a long weekend in Milan with my wife and then only child, about twenty-one years ago. We stayed in a hotel inย  Opera, a suburb on the edge of Milan, and used the trams to move around. It's far from being the prettiest place I've ever been, but there was enough to do and see to fill the three days that we were there, and we still remember that trip with affection. However, it's long enough ago that I can't remember details, other than visiting the Duomo and the Castello Sforzesco but can remember being disappointed that we didn't book to see The Last Supper.ย

You missed that by a couple of thousand years and I think it was a private party.

One spot that I enjoyed when I was there about a hundred years ago (it was at a time when you could just walk in to see The Last Supper) was the Navigli (sp?) canals area. Apparently now it's quite trendified but probably still fun. I also went to the Pinacoteca di Brera to see the Caravaggios.ย

Turin is very nice and worth a day to visit. Cool cafes, loads of funky old trams to ride and a trip up to the hilltop church is good - there's a mountain railway thing. Views were incredible.ย
