It's a hateful little program
anyway, I want to insert a shape, when I'm highlighting the shape I want I'm getting a message
This document is open in compatibility mode. To take full advantage of this feature convert this document to a new file format by clicking the File tab and then clicking convert
I click File tab, and there is no Convert option anywhere 👿

Try Save As and save it as a .docx rather than .doc, perhaps? (or "Word" rather than "Word 2003".)
