A recent update from microsoft resulted in a message as above - apparently the 'key' is questionable . I've had the laptop for 5 or 6 years and I'm not keen to buy another copy of Office.I now get a message when I open Outlook which says 'in 15 days applications will be marked as not genuine'. I presently use Outlook and Excel and Word - what are the options for a computing numpty ?

Is it actually genuine? Do you have the licence key?

I bought the laptop from a mate - he thinks the Office software was loaded when he bought it - the message says the key was for a large corporate user ...
will google as suggested too

borrow a key off a friend, its illegal, but unless he's given it out to several hundred people he's unlikely to get into trouble.

You can turn WGA off.

Just use Autopatcher to get updates.

You could just get opensource office and forget about the windows thing.

Or you could just, y'know, pay for the software you're using. 😕

(PS OpenOffice is rubbish IMHO)

ditto Graham S's oppionion of Open Office.

The spreadsheet is unusable as all the commands are differnt to excell! Its like trying to use a wordprocessor that only types in French!

As this problem has only recently effected you, it must be a recent WGA update that's triggered it. You can always roll-back your machine to a date that predates the WGA patch, assuming you've first got all stuff after that date backed-up elsewhere.
Suggest you review what's going to be installed by automatic updates before you downlaod it, and mark all the WGA patches as "do not install".

GrahamS - not totally averse to paying for the software but it does seem to be a mix up over the key - it's not a pirate copy - the laptop is 5 years old and it's all been fine through countless other msoft updates.
I'm waiting for a reply from the original supplier (small independent retailer)so I'll see what that brings before new software.

Microsoft will give you a free or heavily discounted copy if you name the shop that sold you the computer with the copy of Office on it.

Turfroof - if the key was for "a large corporate user" then the software should have been removed before you bought it. Yep - that means you've been using unlicensed software. If you really need it, go buy a copy.

If it should be legit then I'd chase up the original shop that sold it.

Either this is the first update that has installed the WGA agent that checks your Office key. Or Microsoft have recently added that key to the list of widely pirated ones.

Err, its not. Its like using a different piece of software with different commands. It still works just fine for all but the most extreme uses.

OO is fine if you dont want the bells and whistles of animations and stuff in powerpoint, or transferring it between O and OO all the time if its a complex document.

I've been using OO for years and won't revert to MO. Never any problems, free, text files are way smaller when in OO format.

Never any problems: provided you don't need to actually exchange files to anyone using Microsoft Office. And you don't mind it eating loads of memory, crashing randomly and having no decent help files.

Text files (assuming you mean Word vs Writer files): I never saw any significant difference in file size.

I find OpenOffice ok to use.
Its free, I haven't got a few hundred £££'s to lash on Office software.

Can you not block MS Office from accessing the net via your Firewall...?

Me neither. Luckily Office 2007 Home and Student Edition is £54 for three licences.

Edit: or mug a student and use druidh's link for the "Academic" versions.

Thanks all - the Druidh link looks like the most cost effective/legit way of sorting it ....
