Now we don't have a gas cooker I can't heat a nail up for hole punching.
What's a good alternative, would an electric soldering iron melt a hole through 5mm of plastic?

A soldering iron might struggle a bit, but try one of those long jet lighter jobbies for lighting barbeques, ought to get a nail hot enough.
Worth trying a soldering iron with a largish tip on, you never know.

I use a plumber's gas blow torch and an old screwdriver for such tasks.

Heat the nail/screwdriver above a candle?
Hold it with pliers not your fingers 🙂

Other sources of naked flame are available.

Candle, camping stove, gas lighter, kitchen blow torch, plumbers gas torch, etc etc.

(A £10 camping stove is a pretty cheap option if this is something you need to do regularly)

I used to use a soldering iron, back in a past life. Makes a mess of the tip, though.

Electric? You can heat the tip of a screwdriver on the ring.
