Watching TV just now I asked my wife what the smell was.
Turns out it was the TV remote melting on top of the cast iron stove.
I've scraped away as much as I can but there's a fine layer of melted plastic like a silhouette remaining.
Any tips on how to remove it?
Watches with interest - a less costly elastic band here. Still got the ring mark on stove top tho.
Been there done that. I let it cool to room temp then chipped it off. It all came off but left a mark so I resprayed with stove paint - I used morso paint but I guess other brands/colours are available. Looked like new afterwards but the paint smokes until it 'cooks' off and hardens. So light the stove open the window and leave the room first time.
Get a leaf blower and plenty of fuel. Rig up the leaf blower, blast furnace style. It will get hot. Wear shorts and sunglasses. You are aiming to get the full body of the stove at least red hot, but before the flue ignites the roof.
Any residue will burn off, but this course of action is not without risk.
Maybe the repaint is the best idea?
Wife put hair straighteners on ours after using them as she thought they would be safely away from setting anything else on fire then forgot to take them off after setting the stove alight. I found the remains outside the back door when I got home. Plastic burnt off in the end but left a mark, left it as it was to remind her not to do it again....
Week later, found the replacements outside as she thought they would be safer on the induction hob. Cables melt very quickly on rings that get turned on.

🤣
(easy to imagine though - nice cold surface, ...)
