Foam and mattress are words that do not belong together in the same sentence.

The end.
I’m one week into trying an Emma mattress (double, just myself) and it’s bloody uncomfortable 😣 but I’m unsure if that’s the fault of the mattress or due to my aching bones and muscles (nae ****ing muscles probably the issue) related to my MS. Previous mattress was a 10yr old £250 cheapy pocket sprung thing that was sagging in the middle with a £40 mattress topper that resembles a thick duvet, was comfortable in certain positions but hard to get out of. I sleep on my front, very occasionally on my side and find it impossible to sleep on my back no matter how tired I get.
Currently got the old mattress topper on the Emma mattress and it’s a bit better but not the blissful nights sleep I was expecting, I wake up every 90mins or so with aching bones so I guess I’ll be sending it back, perhaps I’m not heavy enough at 60 to 65kg to sink into the Emma mattress on its own but I’m a bit loathe to purchase an additional fancy topper to use with an already expensive mattress, I’ll persevere for another week or so with the Emma as it may be my MS playing silly buggers but don’t bother/avoid their pillows, the most uncomfortable hard lumps of foam I’ve ever had the misfortune of laying my head on.
Come to think of it I should really get to bed as I’m up at 6.30 and bloody tired but I’m sitting with legs raised in my living room chair, says it all I guess about the Emma mattress
I’m not a fan of our Simba either 😫
Not a recommendation here but .. I'm thinking of returning my Emma mattress. It's too firm for me.
What's your budget?
The Ikea Malfors got a good review by Which? and it's only £100 (standard double), looks very thin to me though. The Casper Essential (£400) and Emma Original (£650) gt the highest scores but it's one of those things that are very individual so the online options with trial periods are a good idea.
Don't have a personal recommendation, my current pocket sprung/foam hybrid mattress is 17 years old now and I can't decide what to replace it with either :p I doubt I'll go pure foam though, they just don't seem very breathable (at least not a couple I've tried).
It's for my son, so I doubt the budget is huge. He weighs the best part of naff all so probably wouldn't want a firm mattress. He has a girlfriend now, so is also considering a new, bigger, bed.
I love our Simba. Sleep like Ive been shot.
Not too warm, very supportive. Not great in SportMode(TM), requires far too much effort. But at my age it's the sleep that matters. 😉
Had a old memory foam mattress that was getting a bit tired, bought a pocketsprung mattress with memoryfoam top layer as I thought it would be better for my back(have spondylitis) was like sleeping on a rock.
Persevered with it for about 9 months and in the end gave it to charity, bought another memoryfoam mattress from Amazon and comfortable sleep is now resumed.
Also have experience of the ikea memory foam mattresses (house we stayed in last summer has them) thought they were bloody awful, to thin and hard.
Moral everyones different and what works for one may not work for another just like Saddles.
Avoid memory foam now, okay for a year or so and then 'memory' stays, plus get very hot. Use this place now, great mattresses, friendly and helpful advice: https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product-category/mattresses/
60 day free return if not happy
I get bad lower back ache in bed, have tried a few mattresses over the last 6 months to try and find something that works for me:
- Leesa - quite firm feeling, no better for the back
- REMfit 500 - had a really nice feel, thought it was going to be great, but no better for MY back but the wife really liked it
- Tweak slumber NREM - this is a configurable mattess that is proving slightly better than the other options. Well worth a look at how it works... you pay a bit more for it though!
I clicked that John Ryan by Design link, nearly gave me a heart attack!
A health warning would have been a good idea!
Where are you based?
I use a company in Huddersfield.
£140 for a 8” thick foam mattress with 1” memory foam on top.
Bargain!

Thought there would be some exciting pictures of the mattresses in use. Is disappoint. What is so upsetting about a collection of beds?
Mattresses are like saddles, some suit some people and not others. We got a Leesa and find it very comfortable, online sellers generally give a 100 day money back guarantee, so buy without worry.
We've has a Simba for over a year now, definitely hotter than a normal matress, but very comfortable.
I've had a couple of memory foam mattresses and found them to get too hot and rather smelly after a while, they just seem to absorb body sweat / odour.
Current mattress is a silent night extra firm pocket spring one and It's been great, I fall asleep quicker, get up earlier and don't get back ache. Mattress breathes better so no odours either. Extra firm pocket sprung not as firm as foam (which I found too firm). Trying out mattresses in shop I found what they called firm with conventional matresses to be way too soft.
Go to Premier Inn - try their mattresses out - buy one. £465 delivered for a double.
Those people buying expensive foam mattresses - it's ****ing foam! Profit margin must be stratospheric.
Bought an Otty in the black friday sales last year. It's alright. A hybrid mattress of springs and foams.
We’re on our 2nd memory foam mattress & you couldn’t pay me to go back. No it won’t last the 10 years they’re advertising ‘guarantees!’ but then neither do normal mattresses. So as much as I believe the Tempur is the best memory foam I’ve tried or tested , I ain’t paying their prices again. We went for an Eve replacement & have had it just under a year. Initially it was significantly firmer than the (7-8 year old) tempur it replaced, but we also slept like logs without the spinning/shifting around we been doing. Almost a year down the line it’s more pliable so more comfortable, & I’m happy to recommend the brand. Neither if us have had issues with overheating, so I can only put this down to the ppl, rather than the mattress
Another vote for Eve, I also sleep like I've been shot. So much so we missed the last garage burglary attempt.
Thanks to redstripes link above i've now got a mattress coming from john ryan by design, i spoke to them on the phone yesterday and explained my issues regarding aches/pains and they recommended their cheapest/softest option without the use of any mattress topper, so hopefully that'll be here this week and the emma hard lump o' foam mattress and pillow will be picked up and refunded, the new mattress works out around £100ish cheaper so that'll pay for a new duvet and bed linen
Tried a memory foam thing - Casper - and didn't like it at all. Got a bad back, very hot, even in Autumn, and just didn't feel right.
Bought a traditional Hypnos and it's been great. Firm, but comfy and suits us well.
Of course, it's very personal and some people love the foam types. The main problem I found with the Casper was it seemed to sink in the hip area, putting strain on my back. I prefer it firmer (the mattress) so I sleep flatter.
