Has anyone on here been to the Matlock Raft Race on Boxing Day?
Is it as fun to watch as The Time's recent article made out?

Is it likely to be worth driving to for over an hour?
It finishes early afternoon, so at least there'd be a bit of time to mooch around afterwards & be a tourist for a bit...
I read that it's fun to watch, just don't know if it'll be worth the drive, that's all?

I work in Matlock. I've seen it a few times and keep thinking of having a go with a few mates/family, but the Derwent looks bitterly cold this time of year! It is funny to see though.
If you're planning to walk around Matlock Bath. Its all fruit machines and chippy's!
Hi,
I have done it quite a few times, both as a raft member and doing safety cover from kayaks. The best place for watching is the weir near to Arkwrights Mill to the South of Matlock Bath, usually the site of raft brake ups and minor incidents. You can watch from the roadside footpath or from the path on the riverside via the footbridge near the Pavilion.
Lots of folk come to watch and it gets quite busy.
Paul.
Hmm, cheers for the info - might be worth the trip I guess for something to do, maybe head off somewhere else for a nice lunch afterwards then.
Ta.
