Following the flow of information concerning my suddenly clunky Pug I need to change the oil and filter. Oil is going to be Mobil 2000 (10w40 diesel) and the filter recommended is a Mann W712/8. Who sells those on-line in UK? Or just anywhere if trustworthy.
I will also need a P716 at the same time.
Cheers!

Think GSF do them, halfords can get them in, any motor factors in the UK Parts Alliance clicky will stock them, don't know how many of those will post out though.

Think I might have a couple in the garage, could have a look in the morning if you want.

Thanks, please do if you can.
Halfords? They didn't know the brand at the Newry branch.

Brown Brothers or Edmunds Walker and you'll have to collect.

Get a different brand?

I'd only use Mann or OE filters (TBH Mann ARE OE for lots of manufacturers), Mann are all built to OE spec for each application, all W712 filters are the same size and thread but each /n variant has different internal specs whereas most of the other brands just list applications by external dimensions and thread size so one filter covers many appications.

And the problem with that is? I'm quite sure that the Powertrain range would do the same job, otherwise it couldn't be sold.

Yes, it certainly would be just as good but as Mann comes recommended by STW massive, my mates and the guy who runs the Frenchie spares shop back home I'll fit that.
don, it's just like why a Scandal not an Inbred, they both can do the same job.

And the problem with that is?

Cars have different service intervals and filters need to remove paticulates of a certain minimum size from the oil and deal with different flow rates and pressures, to do this there are different grades of filter medium used. Most also have bypass valves inside them which open when the filter medium is clogged. If a manufacturer just adds a listing to it's catalogue because the filter physically fits there is a danger that the filter will become clogged before the service interval causing the bypass valve to open and the oil not being filtered from that point on (this was a problem when Ford increased the service interval on the 1.3 endura engine when the Ka was released - Mann issued a technical update and new filter almost immediately other well known filter brands took several years) or a new engine operates at higher pressure than others which take the same filter size, in this case the increased pressure could cause the bypass valve to open meaning the oil is never filtered (I remember this was an issue with one of the VAG group engines but I forget which one now.)

I suspect if his chuggy french diesel is a bit sick any filter close to the spec & some oil will be better than its present condition?

Whilst its running on some nice fresh oil & a clean filter he can source the exact stuff he needs over the next couple of months.

MrO, thanks, very helpful, have already saved them in my bookmarks.
Just for the record, the local Irish Peugeot dealer have quoted 16.99 Euro for that filter. Have a guess why a Mann is so popular?
A mate's dad runs a car spares shop in Poland, the filters will probably arrive within a week. Price? A couple of beers with the mate.

I'm pretty sure you'll fine OE on peugoet/citreon is more likely to be filtrauto (parent group of purflux/fram/crosland, and now owned by Sogefi), as the french automotive industry is very patriotic when it comes to part suppliers.

Mann are however good quality filters, and are pretty much OE for most German marques.
