We are in Manchester next week and among other things are having a taster session at the velodrome. We are staying overnight at the travel lodge at sportcity and want somewhere nice to eat on sat night. We thought either a curry in rusholme or a meal in china town.
All ideas welcome.
Many thanks
Steve

China town's a fair bit closer to you than Rusholme. Can't help with requests for either though as I'm not fond of chinese food and don't eat curries in rusholme. Can recmomend Chaophraya in the middle of town if you fancy Thai

Is Chaophraya walkable from the hotel or do we need a taxi, although with us not knowing the city too well I think taxis will be the order of the day.

There is a massive and highly rated Thai* place near the Velodrome, I think.

Give me a few minutes - a mate of mine will know.

(* when I say 'Thai', it could be Indonesian, Malaysian etc etc)

On a sort of local-ish knowledge note, the velodrome is in a bit of manchester that isn't that salubrious...

You could walk into town from there, but it's through post industrial grimness really, and you'd be better off getting a bus or taxi if you want to go out in town.

In Rusholme I can recommend the Sanam- although its totally Halal so no alcohol. There were a lot of asian people eating there last time I was there which is good sign. If you want a drink with your meal then the Lal Qila is good.

chaophraya is incredible. just off cross street, right in the middle of town, and no not really walkable from the velodrome area.
if you want chinese, then little yang sing is arguably the best in chinatown itself.
rusholme curries are much of a muchness, but you probably won't go wrong with sanam's or lal qila. the best curries in manchester are not to be found in rusholme though...

I used to work in Manchester and lived in Rusholme, just off Dickinson Road. Olivia something or other. My drive home used to be through the curry mile, absolute tortue given that tea would often be less fragrant than the cuisine I'd just passed.

Not been there for years mind so I have no worthwhile contribution but the reminiscence was nice.

Little further afield, but the finest curry you will ever have, go to the Jai Kathmandu on Palatine Road, Northernden.

I went off Chaophraya when a waiter came out of one of the traps without washing their hands. The food was off that day too so haven't been back it was pretty good before then though.

We like the Azad Manzil, on Barlow Moor Road, but that's not in Rusholme.

i prefer asian fusion to azad manzil (it's right next door)... but the best by far is coriander, still on barlow moor road but right up towards didsbury, opposite southern cemetery.
